Ronaldo turns 40, sets retirement timeline

Cristiano Ronaldo has hinted he has no plans to retire for at least another couple of years yet. The Portugal superstar – who declared himself as the greatest football of all-time – celebrated his landmark 40th birthday on Wednesday. But the ever-modest Real Madrid and Manchester United icon has shown no signs of slowing down in Saudi Arabia, where he continues to shine at Al-Nassr. The GOAT is closing in on his 1,000th career goal and is just 33 appearances shy of an astonishing 250 caps for his country. Ronaldo has also set his sights on playing in the 2026 World Cup and despite his Al-Nassr contract expiring this summer, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner is determined to push his limits even further. He said: “I could quit the sport today and I wouldn’t regret anything, but it would be a shame because I’m still very good. I would leave myself saying ‘I can still make a difference for another year or two’, that’s why I live very much in the present and I can’t think long term.” When Ronaldo does eventually decide to call time on his majestic career, the Madeira-born legend ruled out any prospect moving into management – instead revealing his intention to become a football club owner. In an interview with Spanish television station La Sexta, the Euro 2016 winner added: “Owning a club makes more sense. I don’t think my personality is well suited to being a coach. Almost impossible. I have been in football all my life… and being a coach is more complicated than being a player. “That is something that makes more sense. It is not something I rule out, if there is a good business. I do not have a club in my head, football is very momentary.”

Iheanacho drops hint on Sevilla future

On-loan Sevilla star Kelechi Iheanacho has this week dropped something of a hint regarding his future plans with the club. Frontman Iheanacho is for his part fresh off sealing a move away from Nervión. Just six months on from his free agent arrival at Sevilla, the Nigerian international was farmed out on loan, linking up with English Championship side Middlesbrough. Iheanacho’s exit came after what had been a hugely challenging first half-season in La Liga, which saw the former Leicester City man struggle for both game-time and goals. Speaking during his presentation as a Middlesbrough player, as cited by Mundo Deportivo, though, Iheanacho hinted that he has unfinished business in Sevilla’s colours. Asked for his thoughts on the move, the 28-year-old explained: “It’s good to get out, to feel in a different environment. Sevilla is a great club. I loved my experience there. It’s a great team and I’ll be delighted to return there.”

Rashford completes Aston Villa loan move

Marcus Rashford has joined Aston Villa on loan from Manchester United for the remainder of the season. The 27-year-old forward had also been linked with moves to AC Milan and Barcelona this month after falling out of favour at his boyhood club. Rashford, who joined United at the age of seven, has scored 138 goals in 426 appearances since breaking into the first team in 2016 but has not played since December 12. A statement read: “Aston Villa is delighted to announce the loan signing of Marcus Rashford from Manchester United. “The England international, capped 60 times by the Three Lions, joins Villa on a deal until the end of the season.” The PA news agency understands Villa will cover at least 75 per cent of Rashford’s £300,000-plus weekly salary. That figure could reach up to 90 per cent depending on performance-based bonuses and the option to make the move permanent is reported to be £40million. Villa have also secured an option to buy the player in the summer. Rashford’s future has dominated the headlines throughout the transfer window having admitted he was “ready for a new challenge” after being dropped for the derby against Manchester City on December 15. It now seems his appearance against Viktoria Plzen in the Europa League three days earlier could turn out to be his last for United. Rashford failed to impress new United manager Ruben Amorim, who said this week the forward “has to change” to have a future at Old Trafford. Rashford said in a statement on Instagram: “I would like to thank Manchester United and Aston Villa for making this loan deal happen. “I was lucky to have a few clubs approach me but Aston Villa was an easy decision – I really admire the way that Aston Villa have been playing this season, and the manager’s ambitions. I just want to play football and am excited to get started. “I wish everyone at Manchester United all the best for the rest of the season.”

Premier Leaague: Onuachu’s late strike seals Southampton win

A Paul Onuachu’s 87th minute strike sealed victory for Southampton against Premier League fellow strugglers Ipswich Town at Portman Road on Saturday. Despite entering the game as the Premier League’s lowest scorers, Ivan Juric’s side drew first blood thanks to a volley from another Nigerian international, Joe Aribo. The visitors have consistently demonstrated defensive vulnerabilities this season however, and Ipswich were back on level terms just ten minutes later. Liam Delap exploited the visitors’ high line before sliding his strike beyond Aaron Ramsdale to mark the ninth goal of the season for the England youth international. A point would have seen Ipswich climb out of the relegation zone but they were unable to hang on and were undone when Onuachu netted a winner from close range in the closing stages.
