Senegal advanced to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final with a 1-0 victory over Egypt in Wednesday’s first semi-final at Tangier’s Ibn Batouta Stadium. The winning goal came in the 78th minute from Saudi Al Nasr forward Sadio Mane, who broke the deadlock and sent the Senegalese squad into celebration. Following their narrow 1-0 quarterfinal win against Mali, Senegal demonstrated a strong balance of disciplined defending and sharp attacking play. The triumph secures the Lions of Teranga a spot in their second AFCON final in recent tournaments, highlighting their consistency throughout the competition. In the quarterfinal, Iliman Ndiaye scored the decisive goal in the 27th minute against Mali. Senegal’s defense remained organized under pressure, while Mane’s creativity and speed fueled key offensive moves. Manchester City Beat Newcastle 2-0 As Antoine Semenyo Continues Scoring Streak

Antoine Semenyo continued his impressive start at Manchester City, scoring for the second consecutive game as City defeated Newcastle 2-0 in the first leg of the EFL Cup semi-final at St James’ Park. Semenyo opened the scoring in the 53rd minute and later had another effort disallowed, before substitute Rayan Cherki sealed the win in stoppage time, giving Pep Guardiola’s side a strong advantage over the defending champions. The Ghana international had marked his City debut with a goal in the 10-1 FA Cup thrashing of Exeter City just days earlier. The first half offered few clear chances. Newcastle’s best opportunity came in the opening five minutes when Anthony Gordon’s cross found Yoane Wissa, whose hurried shot flew over the bar. Both goalkeepers, James Trafford for City and Nick Pope for Newcastle, were largely untroubled. Newcastle were hit by injury on the verge of halftime, with Jacob Murphy replaced by the in-form Harvey Barnes. Early in the second half, Wissa nearly made amends for his earlier miss, seeing a header tipped onto the woodwork by Trafford. Bruno Guimaraes also rattled the post as the Magpies searched for the opener. City broke the deadlock moments later. Jeremy Doku’s low cross took a slight deflection off Bernardo Silva and fell to Semenyo, who tapped in from close range to score his second goal in as many games. Semenyo later appeared to double his tally with a clever flick from a corner, but after a VAR review, referee Chris Kavanagh ruled it out due to Erling Haaland being offside. The decision briefly lifted Newcastle’s players and fans, with Sandro Tonali narrowly missing a chance late in the game. Cherki then forced a save from Pope before ultimately scoring in stoppage time, ensuring City took a two-goal cushion back to the Etihad Stadium ahead of the second leg.

Morocco 2025: Eagles Remain Confident as Gusau Quashes Fears of Manipulative Officiating

President of the Nigeria Football Federation, Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau (MON) has dismissed fears of possible biased officiating when the Super Eagles lock horns with hosts Atlas Lions of Morocco in Wednesday night’s Africa Cup of Nations second semi-final in Rabat.   “I do not have the same fears of the match officials being biased as some people have. I believe that the grass is always green and that the playing pitch is level. I do not see a situation in which the match officials will be working against any team’s interest.   “Last summer, we were here in Morocco, for the Women Africa Cup of Nations, and we played the host nation in the Final, even coming from two goals behind to achieve victory. There is nothing to fear. This is the highest level of football on the African continent, and the officials know that CAF as well as the whole world is watching, and will not do anything untoward.”   The NFF supremo and President of WAFU B spoke against the backdrop of widespread fears among Nigerian ball fans that the match officials could blatantly or surreptitiously work in favour of the host nation, which is looking for a second AFCON title after its maiden gong 50 years ago.   The Super Eagles camp continues to radiate confidence and self-belief ahead of the encounter, as the players keep strictly and professionally to their daily schedule at the Hotel Rihab and at the training ground – Complexe Sportif Mohamed VI.   Feelers from the Atlas Lions camp reveal that the players are in trepidation of the impact that Nigerian midfielder Alexander Iwobi can have on Wednesday night’s game.   Iwobi supplied 22 line-breaking passes in the quarter-final game against Mozambique (which Nigeria won 4-0) and 14 against Algeria’s Desert Foxes in Saturday’s quarter final duel in Marrakech. Nigeria won both games, scoring six goals and conceding none.   The 29-year-old, who debuted for Nigeria against the Democratic Republic of Congo in a friendly in Belgium on 8th October 2015, also supplied the assists for Nigeria’s first two goals of the competition, in the 2-1 win over Tanzania in Fés on 23rd December.   He will earn his 96th cap for the Super Eagles on Wednesday night.

Man United Set to Appoint Michael Carrick as Interim Manager

Michael Carrick is set to be confirmed as Manchester United’s interim head coach until the end of the season. A deal has been agreed in principle to appoint Carrick and his coaching staff, and work is now taking place to finalise contract details ahead of an official announcement. That could potentially come later on Tuesday and the 44-year-old’s first game in charge is set to be Saturday’s Manchester derby. Carrick and his staff could take their first training session on Wednesday. The first-team squad are off on Tuesday, but preparations for the visit of Manchester City will step up a level tomorrow. Carrick emerged as the preferred candidate to take over until the end of the season after face-to-face talks with chief executive Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox. Carrick met the pair last Thursday, while Ole Gunnar Solskjaer spoke to them on Saturday. Berrada and Carrick were impressed with Carrick’s vision during those discussions and held further talks on Monday with a view to concluding a deal. That included the make-up of the former Middlesbrough manager’s backroom team, with United short of senior coaches after the departure of Ruben Amorim and his Portuguese coaching team. Carrick took charge of United for three games in the autumn of 2021 after Solskjaer was sacked, steering them to victories against Villarreal and Arsenal and a draw with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. He had been a part of Solskjaer’s staff but left the club when Ralf Rangnick was appointed until the end of the season. He has since had a spell in charge of Middlesbrough, reaching the play-offs in 2022/23, but he was sacked at the end of last season after a 10th place finish.

Native Doctor Arrested For Allegedly Scamming Fans With Mali AFCON Victory Claims

A self-proclaimed marabout was arrested in Bamako for allegedly defrauding football fans by promising victory for the Mali national team at the Africa Cup of Nations. The man, identified as Mr Sinayogo, reportedly collected over 22 million CFA francs, roughly €33,500, from supporters before Mali’s 1-0 quarter-final defeat to Senegal. He is now being held by the cybercrime division on charges of fraud. Two videographers who visited him confirmed his detention, noting that authorities had delayed action while the tournament was ongoing. According to a social media content creator close to Sinayogo, the man, formerly a political activist, “proclaimed himself a marabout overnight and made a fortune.” Mali’s hopes of reaching the semi-finals ended in Tangiers on January 9 when recalled Senegal striker Iliman Ndiaye scored in the first half. The match turned further against Mali when captain Yves Bissouma was sent off in first-half added time after receiving a second yellow card. Mali goalkeeper Djigui Diarra made a string of outstanding saves, but a costly error allowed Senegal to take the lead. Senegal, the 2022 champions, will face either title-holders Ivory Coast or seven-time winners Egypt in the semi-finals. Ndiaye, who was named player of the match, said, “I am happy to have won the award, but the most important thing is we have progressed to the semi-finals. We played well and are constantly improving.” Senegal coach Pape Thiaw added, “It was not an easy match against a talented Mali team. Had we been more clinical in front of goal we could have scored more goals.” Mali coach Tom Saintfiet said, “It was a difficult match for us because we had to play with 10 men. I am proud of the players for what they did, not only tonight but throughout the AFCON.” Earlier in the match, Bissouma was yellow-carded for fouling Senegal forward Sadio Mane, while Mali striker Lassine Sinayoko was denied by a brilliant sliding tackle from Senegal’s Krepin Diatta.

Nigerian Player, Terem Moffi And Teammate, Jérémie Boga Seek OGC Nice Exit After Violent Fan Attack

Nigeria international Terem Moffi and his OGC Nice teammate Jérémie Boga have taken formal steps to end their contracts with the Ligue 1 side following a violent confrontation with supporters late last year. The duo were attacked by angry fans at Nice’s training ground in November 2025 after a 3-1 defeat to Lorient. Reports said the supporters physically assaulted the players, hitting, kicking and spitting on them in the aftermath of the loss. According to Get French Football News, both players were targeted over separate incidents that sparked outrage among sections of the fanbase. Moffi, a former Lorient player, was seen laughing with Lorient president Loïc Féry on Ligue 1 Plus after the match, which marked Nice’s sixth consecutive defeat in all competitions. Boga also came under fire after inviting Olympique de Marseille fans to the Allianz Riviera ahead of Nice’s heavy 5-1 home defeat to their rivals, an action for which he later apologised. Neither Moffi nor Boga has featured for Nice since the incident. L’Équipe reports that the players have now officially initiated the process to leave the club. “Since the incident, Boga and Moffi have been unable to return to first-team training,” Get French Football News wrote. “Their initial sick leave period was meant to last around one week; however, it has been repeatedly extended. The two Nice players have also opened legal proceedings against the alleged perpetrators of the violence on November 30. The players’ lawyers have now moved to see their contracts terminated, on the basis that the necessary measures to ensure their security were not taken by the club.” The report added that a meeting with the league’s judicial commission is scheduled for Thursday. Moffi and Boga are both contracted to Nice until the summer of 2027. The 26-year-old Moffi recently returned from injury after being sidelined since October and has featured in 10 matches this season, scoring two league goals.
