EFCC Drags Lawyer to Court for False Information

The Kaduna Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC has arraigned a lawyer, Steve Adamu before Justice Darius Khobo of the Kaduna State High Court, sitting in Kaduna State on a one-count charge of false information peddling. The charge reads: “That you Barrister Steve Adamu (m) on or about the 15th day of September, 2022 in Kaduna, Kaduna State, within the jurisdiction of the Honourable Court, committed an offence to wit: wilfully gave false information to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, which information was used to carry out investigation on your complaint to the Commission, which information you knew to be false and you thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 16(1) of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (Establishment) Act, 2004 and punishable under Section 16(2) of the same Act. He pleaded “not guilty”, prompting the prosecution counsel, M.E. Eimonye to ask the court for a trial date, while the defence counsel urged the court to grant the defendant bail. However, investigations by the Commission proved the allegations to be false and malicious, prompting his arrest and prosecution.

Akpabio Says There’s No Society Without Crime As Senate Debates Rising Violence In Nigeria

Senate President Godswill Akpabio on Tuesday addressed growing concerns over Nigeria’s escalating violence, urging lawmakers and citizens to remain calm amid worsening insecurity. His comments came during a tense Senate plenary focused on recent deadly incidents, including the killing of Brigadier-General Uba Musa in Borno State, the abduction of 25 schoolgirls in Kebbi, and the murder of a school vice principal — all occurring within 24 hours. During the session, senators voiced frustration over the deteriorating security situation, but Akpabio cautioned against despair, highlighting the challenges faced by Nigeria’s stretched security forces. “We sympathise deeply with the families affected, but we must remember that Nigeria is a very large country,” he said. He noted the practical limits facing security agencies, emphasizing that even during elections, it is impossible to deploy a policeman to every polling unit. “Our security agencies are overstretched and often find themselves in places they shouldn’t ordinarily be,” Akpabio added. The Senate President also pointed out that crime is a global issue, not unique to Nigeria. “There is no society without crime. Even the almighty America records crime daily. But we must continue to do our best to minimise it,” he stated. Nigeria has seen a surge in attacks by insurgents, bandits, and other armed groups in recent months, prompting calls from critics for urgent government action to curb the rising violence before it spirals further out of control.

Gunmen stormed the Christ Apostolic Church (CAC) at Oke Isegun in Eruku, a border community with Kogi in Ekiti LGA, Kwara State, abducting an unknown number of worshippers, including the pastor. A video captured during a live stream, seen by TheCable, shows the congregation in the middle of a service when gunshots rang out around the church. Panic spread as the worshippers scrambled for safety, while several armed bandits forced their way into the building. Reports indicate that at least five attackers ransacked the church, stealing belongings from worshippers. The PUNCH reported that three people were killed during the assault, while the pastor and several church members were taken away. A witness said, “The gunmen came into the church while people were gathered. They started shooting, and three people died immediately. They later rounded up some worshippers, including the pastor, and marched them into the bush.” Community leader Benjamin Ayeoribe added that Eruku has faced repeated bandit attacks over the last three weeks, with calls for help to local and state authorities yielding no results. “We have begged the local and state governments for help, but nothing concrete has come. We are living in fear every day,” he said. The attack comes less than 48 hours after bandits raided Government Girls Secondary School in Maga, Kebbi State, abducting 25 schoolgirls. Cloudflare Glitch Causes Widespread Outages Across Nigerian Sites And X

Several major Nigerian websites — along with international platforms, including X — experienced widespread service disruptions on Tuesday following issues linked to global internet infrastructure provider Cloudflare. Cloudflare confirmed on its service status page that it was investigating “an issue which potentially impacts multiple customers,” adding that more information would be shared as soon as available. NetBlocks, a global internet watchdog, also reported that X and many other platforms were affected by a technical fault within Cloudflare’s network. According to the organisation, the outage is not connected to any government-imposed restriction or country-level internet disruption but is strictly a Cloudflare-related technical problem.

Hackers Breach Phones Of Aliko Dangote And Femi Otedola, Demand Ransom

The mobile phones of Aliko Dangote, CEO of Dangote Group, and Femi Otedola, chairman of First HoldCo Plc, have reportedly been hacked, TheCable can report. Sources close to both businessmen revealed that their devices were compromised over the past week. While Otedola’s phone was hacked once, Dangote’s device was reportedly breached twice within two days. It remains unclear whether both men have fully regained access to their phones, but insiders said the hackers have demanded money. “The hackers are asking for money from both men,” an insider told TheCable. Dangote and Otedola, who share a close friendship and often refer to each other as “brothers,” have been involved in various business engagements. Otedola attended the announcement of Dangote’s plan to expand his refinery’s capacity from 650,000 to 1.4 million barrels per day. Describing Dangote as “Africa’s pride,” Otedola praised his friend’s long-term investments. “Aliko’s relentless commitment to investing in Nigeria and Africa will outlive him, as these are legacy investments that will define generations,” he said. “Soon, Nigerians will own part of this refinery, a powerful reminder that this vision is not just for Dangote, but for all Nigerians and Africans.” Otedola, author of the bestselling book Making It Big, recently boosted his stake in First HoldCo Plc, acquiring 64.87 million shares valued at N2.01 billion.

House Of Representatives Passes Bill For Second Reading To Lower Age For Senate And Governorship To 30

The House of Representatives on Tuesday approved for second reading a bill proposing to amend the 1999 Constitution to reduce the minimum age for Senate and governorship elections from 35 to 30 years. The bill, titled “A Bill for an Act to Alter the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended) to Reduce the Age for Qualification for Membership of the Senate and Office of the Governor and for Related Matters (HB. 2235),” is sponsored by Hon. Esin Etim and 24 other lawmakers. Currently, candidates for the Senate and governorship must be at least 35 years old, while those seeking election to the House of Representatives can contest from age 25. Etim, representing Offong/Oruko/Udung Uko Federal Constituency in Akwa Ibom State, argued that the existing age limits block young Nigerians from progressing in politics and restrict opportunities for leadership development. He highlighted that the 10-year gap between eligibility for the House and higher offices prevents young legislators who start at 25 from contesting for the Senate or governorship after two terms, as they would still be only 33 years old. “This bill seeks to reduce the required age from 35 to 30, maintaining the traditional five-year gap between eligibility for the House and higher offices,” Etim said. “A member starting at 25 would still be too young to advance after two terms. This House should address that.” Speaker Tajudeen Abbas then called for a voice vote, and lawmakers overwhelmingly supported the bill for second reading. The bill has now been referred to the House Committee on Constitution Review for further legislative action.

Wife Of Kebbi School Vice Principal Recounts Husband’s Murder During Bandit Attack

Amina Hassan has shared a heart-wrenching account of the night armed bandits killed her husband, the vice principal of Government Girls’ Comprehensive Secondary School Gada in Kebbi State, and abducted 25 schoolgirls from a nearby school. The attack took place early Monday, leaving the community in shock and fear. Security agencies confirmed the students were kidnapped, while police reported that one staff member was killed and another injured during the assault. The Kebbi Police Command revealed that heavily armed attackers scaled the school fence, forced their way into the hostel, and engaged officers on duty in a gunfight. Inside the compound, the bandits killed a staff member, injured another, and fled with the students. In her interview with DW, Amina recounted how she and her family were awakened by strange footsteps around 3:30 am. Initially thinking it was cattle, she alerted her husband, only to realize armed men had entered their home. “My name is Amina Hassan, wife of the vice principal of Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School Gada, Kebbi State, who was killed by armed bandits,” she said. “We were sleeping when I heard footsteps near the house and school hostel. I woke my husband thinking cows had entered our farm, but then I saw men in army camouflage carrying guns.” She described how the attackers threatened her husband before killing him. “They warned him not to do anything unusual. My husband asked if he could pray before they shot him. They allowed him, and after saying his final prayer, they killed him. When I tried to go near him, they threatened to shoot me too,” she said. The bandits also attempted to abduct Amina, but she refused to go with them. “They wanted me to follow them after killing my husband, but I said no. They told the children to lie down. Once they left, I tried to leave with the kids and saw they had surrounded the entire area, including the school hostels,” she explained. Amina identified the attackers as young men wearing army camouflage, with three entering the hostel while others remained outside. From their voices, she said they appeared to be Fulani. “They were young men dressed in army camouflage. Three went inside the hostel, and the rest stayed outside. From their voices, it seemed they were Fulanis,” she added. This account paints a vivid picture of the terror endured by Amina and the community during the deadly attack.
