Owo Church Attack: Witnesses Give Harrowing Accounts As DSS Presents Additional Evidence

Two prosecution witnesses on Tuesday delivered harrowing testimonies about the June 5, 2022, terror attack on St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Owo, Ondo State, as the Federal High Court in Abuja admitted additional exhibits from the Department of State Services (DSS). The DSS is prosecuting five suspects — Idris Omeiza (25), Al Qasim Idris (20), Jamiu Abdulmalik (26), Abdulhaleem Idris (25), and Momoh Otuho Abubakar (47) — on amended nine-count charges related to terrorism. All the defendants have pleaded not guilty. The attack occurred during a Sunday Mass marking the Feast of Pentecost. Gunmen reportedly stormed the church, locking the main entrance before opening fire on worshippers and detonating explosives. At least 41 people were killed and over 100 injured, leaving a lasting impact on the Owo community. During Tuesday’s hearing, a male witness identified as SSB described the chaos in vivid detail. Under cross-examination by DSS counsel Adedayo Adedipe (SAN), he explained that after worshippers attempted to secure the main door, the attackers forced entry through a secondary entrance. “In a matter of seconds, I saw one man holding a gun. He looked at the church, then beckoned to someone behind him,” SSB told the court. SSB initially misidentified one of the defendants but later correctly identified Al Qasim Idris and Abdulhaleem Idris as two of the attackers, noting that Abdulhaleem carried a bag as they prepared to leave. He described hearing multiple explosions and seeing worshippers shot indiscriminately. “I fell on my face in fear. After the attackers left, I saw two dead bodies outside the church. More than 40 worshippers were killed while many others were injured,” he recounted. A second witness, a female referred to as SSC, told the court she survived but suffered permanent injuries to her left leg. She described a gunman dropping dynamite near her while asking, “Do you know why we are doing this?” She also recounted seeing her two-year-old cousin’s body, whose mother could not identify her due to severe injuries and debris from the explosion. SSC showed the court her operated leg, which has undergone four surgeries and still contains metal fixtures. Both witnesses confirmed that they had given statements to the DSS at its Akure office on May 26, 2024. Their extra-judicial statements were admitted into evidence as Exhibits B and C without objection from the defense. The Federal High Court has been hearing the trial in multiple sessions, with the prosecution presenting detailed evidence, including witness testimonies and material exhibits, to establish the identities of the perpetrators and the sequence of the attack. DSS counsel Adedayo Adedipe (SAN) said the prosecution plans to call seven more witnesses, with two expected at the next hearing, to provide further insights into the planning, execution, and aftermath of the attack. Justice Emeka Nwite adjourned the trial to January 14, 2026, for continuation. The Owo church attack remains one of Nigeria’s deadliest terrorist assaults on civilians in a place of worship. The trial is a critical step toward accountability for the victims and highlights ongoing security challenges, particularly the vulnerability of religious gatherings, and the role of the DSS in counter-terrorism investigations and prosecutions.

Lagos Court Orders Meta To Pay $25,000 To Femi Falana Over False Facebook Health Claim

A Lagos State High Court has ordered Meta Platforms Inc., the parent company of Facebook, to pay $25,000 in damages to Nigerian human rights lawyer Femi Falana (SAN) after a video on the platform falsely suggested he was suffering from a terminal illness. The ruling, delivered on Tuesday, January 13, 2026, rejected Meta’s claim that it was merely acting as a “hosting” or “intermediary” platform. The court noted that Meta monetizes content and that harm from misinformation is reasonably foreseeable, establishing a clear duty of care toward individuals affected by content on its platform. Olumide Babalola, convener of PrivCon Nigeria and co-author of the Casebook on Privacy and Data Protection Law in Nigeria, represented Falana and disclosed the verdict on LinkedIn. He said the case arose from a video published on Facebook in early 2025 that falsely portrayed Falana as suffering from a terminal illness. Babalola said, “The court affirmed that global technology companies hosting content for commercial gain owe a duty of care to those affected. The Court rejected the idea that platforms can avoid responsibility by claiming to be intermediaries, especially when harm from misinformation is foreseeable.” He added that being a public figure does not strip someone of their right to privacy. “The publication of false medical information was found to intrude into the claimant’s private life. This decision reinforces that health data is protected under Nigerian law, even for public figures.” Background On February 9, 2025, Falana filed a $5 million lawsuit against Meta in a Lagos High Court, claiming that a Facebook video titled “AfriCare Health Centre” violated his constitutional right to privacy under Section 37 of the 1999 Constitution and sections of the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023. The video falsely suggested that Falana suffered from prostatitis. In his filings, he said Meta published his name, image, and fabricated health information without verification, affecting millions of viewers, and allegedly aimed to drive traffic and advertising revenue. He also requested that the video be removed immediately. Falana argued that the publication intruded on his private life, portrayed him in a false light, and caused emotional and psychological distress. The court’s decision not only awarded damages but also affirmed the principle that digital platforms are responsible for harmful content disseminated on their sites, even involving public figures.

Bello Turji Resurfaces, Issues Deadly Threats To Villagers In Sokoto East

Peace in Sabon Birni and Isa local government areas of Sokoto East Senatorial District is under threat as feared bandit leader Bello Turji reportedly resurfaced, warning that anyone who refuses to pledge loyalty to him would face deadly consequences. The alleged threat, directed at Tidibale village in Isa Local Government Area, has caused widespread panic, prompting residents to flee their homes for safety. Many villagers have moved to Isa town or neighbouring communities in Shinkafi Local Government, Zamfara State, leaving behind their crops and possessions. A resident of Tidibale, speaking anonymously, said, “The village is in fear of what may happen to us, so we abandoned everything and fled. Some of us have not even harvested our crops. We just left to save our lives.” Alhaji Shehu, another local, described the harsh conditions faced by those displaced, saying they now live with relatives or in makeshift tents in open fields, exposed to severe weather. “We depend on handouts, and sometimes we go hungry when there is no help,” he said. Shehu also revealed that Turji’s demands included paying a levy, pledging not to report his movements or activities, and cooperating with his foot soldiers on various matters. Responding to the reports, Sokoto State Police Command Public Relations Officer, DSP Ahmed Rufai, said the police had not received any formal notification of the threat. However, after seeing reports on social media, the command contacted the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in the area to verify the information. Rufai noted that a few days ago, bandits attacked Bargaja village in Isa Local Government Area, killing two people and abducting an unspecified number of others. He assured that security agencies were taking measures to apprehend the criminals and urged residents to provide credible information on threats, levies, or other bandit activities. Attempts to reach Senator Ibrahim Lamido, representing Sokoto East Senatorial District, were unsuccessful. Meanwhile, Major General Michael Onoja, Director of Defence Media Operations, stated that the military is still verifying the reports. “We are trying to confirm the information,” he said.

Isaac Oyedepo Reveals God Instructed Him Not To Collect Offerings During Abuja Sunday Services

Pastor Isaac Oyedepo, founder of Isaac Oyedepo Evangelistic Ministries, has announced that his ministry will begin holding Sunday services in Abuja, and in obedience to God’s instruction, will not collect offerings. Church Times reported on Tuesday that Oyedepo shared the update in an online video posted on Sunday, January 11. In the message, he emphasised that the ministry’s main goal is discipleship and equipping people to follow Jesus, rather than following traditional financial practices common in many churches. Speaking on the matter, Oyedepo said, “God gave me specific instructions not to collect offerings.” He clarified that while offering collections are not inherently wrong for other ministries, his assignment is focused entirely on the spiritual growth and development of believers. The announcement coincides with the launch of the ministry’s weekly Sunday services in Abuja. Oyedepo explained that his approach is inspired by the early ministry of Jesus Christ, noting, “All Jesus did during His early ministry was to make disciples; the fire fell, and they were filled and refilled. Before He left, He commanded us to do the same.” He added that true spiritual growth comes from a consistent journey in the Word of God, asking, “How healthy would our churches be if people were truly deep in the Scriptures?”

Nigeria, UAE Sign Trade Deal Removing Tariffs On Over 7,000 Nigerian Products

Nigeria and the United Arab Emirates have signed a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) aimed at boosting bilateral trade and investment by removing tariffs on thousands of Nigerian products entering the UAE. The agreement was finalized on Tuesday in Abu Dhabi, following negotiations led by the Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment, with Dr Jumoke Oduwole, Nigeria’s chief negotiator, at the forefront, according to a State House statement. Under the CEPA, key Nigerian agricultural and industrial exports — including fish, seafood, cereals, oilseeds, cotton, pharmaceuticals, and chemicals — will immediately enter the UAE market duty-free. Over the next three to five years, tariffs on additional products such as machinery, vehicles, electrical equipment, apparel, and furniture will be gradually phased out. The agreement also allows Nigerian businesses to establish corporate entities, subsidiaries, or branches in the UAE. Nigerian business visitors can stay in the country for up to 90 days per year to explore trade and investment opportunities, while intra-company transfers for managers, executives, and specialists will be permitted for renewable three-year terms. In addition, the CEPA addresses longstanding barriers to foreign direct investment, providing greater clarity and legal protection for UAE investors seeking opportunities in Nigeria’s productive sectors, paving the way for stronger economic cooperation between the two nations.

DSS Confirms Death Of Calista Ifedi In Custody At Wawa Barracks

The Department of State Services (DSS) has confirmed that Mrs. Calista Ifedi, who was detained by the agency in November 2021, died while in custody at Wawa Barracks in Niger State. The confirmation came after more than two years of silence from the DSS, during which her family and human rights organisations repeatedly demanded information about her whereabouts. Former presidential candidate and human rights activist Omoyele Sowore disclosed the development on Monday evening, describing it as a disturbing example of impunity within the security agency during the leadership of Yusuf Bichi under the Muhammadu Buhari administration. “Mrs. Calista Ifedi died at Wawa Barracks two years ago under unlawful detention by the lawless Department of State Services (DSS). I share this painful account to bear witness to a grave injustice and to expose the burden of impunity inflicted on Nigerians by the DSS.” Mrs. Ifedi, a small-scale restaurant owner in Enugu, was arrested alongside her husband, Sunday Ifedi, at their home on November 23, 2021. According to Sunday Ifedi, their arrest was arbitrary and no formal charges were ever filed against them. He remained in detention until his release in December 2025. Rights advocates, including Amnesty International Nigeria and lawyer Deji Adeyanju, have consistently maintained that her only alleged offence was that members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) patronised her food business. Following her arrest, she was taken into DSS custody and disappeared from public view for months. Sowore alleged that her health deteriorated while she was held at Wawa Barracks and that she was denied medical attention. “While in detention at Wawa Barracks, Mrs. Ifedi fell ill. Instead of receiving medical care, her repeated complaints were ignored. She was allegedly taunted and left to deteriorate until she died.” Sunday Ifedi said the last time he saw his wife was in March 2022, when they were transferred from the DSS headquarters to Wawa Barracks and separated. He was never officially informed of her death and only learned about it after Sowore personally contacted him. “Her husband was never informed of her death. Tonight, I personally called him to convey this devastating news before making it public.” Calling for accountability, Sowore said, “These are egregious crimes. Nigeria must immediately shut down the Wawa Barracks detention facility. Every official involved in the unlawful detention, neglect, and death of Mrs. Calista Ifedi must be identified, arrested, and prosecuted.” He further accused the DSS of operating with impunity, alleging that its leadership at the time acted with legal backing from former Attorney General Abubakar Malami, SAN. “This tragedy occurred during the period when Yusuf Bichi presided over the DSS with unchecked brutality, aided and protected by Abubakar Malami, SAN, under the criminal Muhammadu Buhari regime. History must not forget, and justice must not be denied.” Sowore also demanded transparency, insisting that Mrs. Ifedi’s remains be produced and independently examined. “Mrs. Calista Ifedi deserved life, dignity, and justice. Nigeria must produce her dead body, and an autopsy must be carried out to determine the circumstances of her death.”

Okpebholo Orders Immediate Release Of Innocent AAU Students Arrested After Ekpoma Unrest

Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has directed security agencies to immediately identify and release any innocent students of Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, who may have been arrested following the recent unrest in the university town. The governor gave the order on Tuesday during a meeting with the President of the Ambrose Alli University Students’ Union Government (SUG), stressing that AAU students were neither responsible for nor involved in the violence that disrupted Ekpoma. Okpebholo described the incident as a criminal act carried out by individuals who are no longer students but operate around the university environment under the guise of activism. According to him, their activities are aimed at causing chaos, extorting students and looting properties. “I have met with the SUG President of AAU, Ekpoma, and we had a very lengthy discussion. As I have consistently maintained, this was not a students’ protest. “These are individuals who are no longer students but hang around the school environment causing trouble and extorting law-abiding students. We will put an end to that,” the governor said. He assured the student leadership that his administration would not allow genuine students to be punished for offences they did not commit, promising swift action on any wrongful arrests. “For any students that were probably arrested, we will look into it immediately and ensure they are released through the SUG President. That is a promise, and it will be carried out as quickly as possible. “The protest was not organised by students. In fact, it was not a protest at all. It was simply an avenue to loot,” Okpebholo added. The governor also dismissed claims that the unrest was linked to kidnapping, describing the reports as false and deliberately misleading. “The kidnapping they are talking about is fake. It was stage-managed. They were arranging to kidnap and release themselves. The most painful part is that someone was even killed,” he said. Condemning the burning of markets and destruction of property in Ekpoma, Okpebholo warned that anyone found sponsoring or using hoodlums to destabilise communities in Edo State would face the full weight of the law, regardless of their status. “I don’t care whether you are a politician or not. If you are using people to destroy our land and economy, we will go after you. Those responsible will be brought to book so justice can be served,” he warned. Speaking on behalf of the students, AAU SUG President, Comrade Osadebamen Ehizogie Michael, thanked the governor for his intervention and rejected attempts to link the violence to students. “It is pitiable that some people want to associate what happened with students. We are here to clearly state that students did not organise any protest,” he said. Also commenting on the situation, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), Prof. Andrew Eromonsele, confirmed that no arrests were made within the university campus, further distancing the institution from the unrest.
