NiMet Warns Nigerians To Brace For Heavy Rainfall And Flash Floods

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a fresh weather alert predicting heavy rainfall and thunderstorms across several parts of the country from Monday to Wednesday, with warnings of possible flash floods in northern and central states. In a statement released on Sunday in Abuja, NiMet forecasted early morning thunderstorms and moderate rainfall over Jigawa, Zamfara, Kano, Kaduna, Bauchi, Yobe, and Katsina on Monday, while Kebbi, Adamawa, and Taraba would likely experience rains later in the day. “Flash floods are possible in Bauchi, Jigawa, Katsina, Kaduna, and Kano States during this period,” the agency warned. For central states such as Niger, Benue, the Federal Capital Territory, Plateau, and Nasarawa, NiMet predicted cloudy skies with light to moderate rainfall, cautioning that parts of Plateau may experience significant flooding. In the southern region, light to moderate rains are expected in Ondo, Imo, Abia, Enugu, Ebonyi, Anambra, Edo, Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom. The agency also forecast that northern states will experience a mix of sunshine and cloud cover on Tuesday, while thunderstorms and rainfall will persist in Adamawa, Taraba, and nearby areas. “Central and southern regions will continue to witness moderate rainfall,” NiMet stated. By Wednesday, northern states are expected to see morning sunshine followed by isolated thunderstorms, while cloudy skies and moderate rainfall will dominate central areas. In the South, Ebonyi, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, and Cross River are forecast to experience morning showers and heavier rain later in the day. NiMet urged residents in flood-prone zones to stay alert, avoid driving during heavy downpours, and secure belongings against strong winds. The agency also advised the public to disconnect electrical appliances during storms and avoid sheltering under trees. For flight safety, NiMet encouraged airlines to rely on up-to-date, airport-specific weather reports. The agency added that more detailed updates and forecasts could be accessed through its official website, www.nimet.gov.ng.

Cooking Gas Price Jumps to N25,000 as Supply Disruptions Hit

The cost of refilling a 12.5kg cylinder of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), also known as cooking gas, has surged to N25,000 this week, up from N17,500 last week. Mr. Bassey Essien, Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Association of Liquefied Petroleum Gas Marketers (NALPGAM), told Vanguard that the spike was due to supply disruptions caused by the recent industrial action by the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN). “Dangote Petroleum Refinery is currently the largest local supplier of cooking gas in Nigeria. The PENGASSAN strike disrupted distribution, leaving many dealers unable to replenish their stocks,” Essien explained. “What we are seeing is a result of demand exceeding supply, but supply should stabilize in the coming days now that the dispute is being resolved.” Vanguard checks revealed that several gas plants in Lagos and surrounding areas were shut down due to shortages, forcing consumers to move from one outlet to another in search of LPG. Recently, Aliko Dangote, President of the Dangote Group, disclosed that the refinery is currently producing 2,000 tonnes of LPG per day, with plans to further increase output to meet national demand. Dangote also emphasized the need to transition Nigerians from firewood and kerosene to LPG for cooking. “If distributors are not making LPG affordable and accessible, we’ll sell directly to consumers to ensure more households can switch to clean energy,” Dangote said, noting concerns over Nigeria’s energy poverty. Before the Dangote Refinery ramped up production, the nation’s LPG demand was primarily met by NLNG Limited. In a recent statement, NLNG reiterated its commitment to providing clean and reliable energy to Nigerian homes through its Domestic LPG (DLPG) scheme, which has been supplying cooking gas since 2007.

Kwara State Scraps PTA Fees, Rolls Out Free Textbooks and School Grants

The Kwara State Government has announced the end of Parents Teachers Association (PTA) levies in all public primary schools, replacing them with annual school grants to cover the running costs of the institutions. Prof. Shehu Adaramaja, Chairman of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), made the announcement during the opening of bids for the 2024 (3rd and 4th quarters) UBEC/SUBEB intervention projects. “The Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, has approved the stoppage of PTA payments across all public primary schools in the state, from Primary 1 to 6. There will be no more PTA levies in Kwara State,” Prof. Adaramaja said. He also revealed that the state government will provide English and Mathematics textbooks free of charge to all pupils in public primary schools. The intervention projects will include the construction of classroom blocks with offices and toilets, renovation and remodeling of classrooms, drilling of solar-powered boreholes with tank stands, rehabilitation of digital literacy centers, provision of foundation literacy materials, fabrication and distribution of two-seater pupils’ desks, and implementation of the Safe Schools Initiative in selected local government areas. Prof. Adaramaja added that Governor AbdulRazaq has approved the payment of 2025 counterpart funds for UBEC/SUBEB projects. He urged contractors handling the projects to strictly follow specifications, warning that shoddy work would not be tolerated. He commended the Executive Secretary of UBEC, Hajiya Aisha Garba, and other stakeholders for their contributions to the success of the programme. Representing the bidders, Maroof Ahmed, Secretary of the Indigenous Contractors Association, thanked the government for the opportunity and promised that members would deliver high-quality projects on time.

Kemi Badenoch Plans to Deport 750,000 Illegal Immigrants in Five Years

Kemi Badenoch Plans to Deport 750,000 Illegal Immigrants in Five Years

The Conservatives have said they would task officials with removing 750,000 illegal immigrants within five years, under Trump-style deportation plans. Under proposals unveiled as its annual conference begins, the party has pledged to ban people who enter the UK without permission from ever claiming asylum. It would also prevent those whose claims are rejected from challenging decisions in the courts, with appeals instead handled by Home Office officials. Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch told the BBC that returnees should “go back to where they came from” or another country deemed safe to receive them, with a strengthened “Removals Force” backed by new powers and a bigger budget. Under the proposals, the Home Office’s immigration enforcement unit would be rebranded as a “Removals Force” and have its budget doubled by an extra £820m per year the Tories say could be unlocked by closing asylum hotels. The party said it would give the new unit a “mandate” to remove at least 150,000 people each year, totalling 750,000 during the five-year lifetime of a Parliament. This would include people currently living in the UK illegally, the party says, as well as future illegal arrivals and all foreign nationals convicted of a crime more serious than minor parking or speeding offences. It would represent around a five-fold increase from the 35,000 migrants who were removed from the UK over the last year – the majority of whom went voluntarily. The Tories said people would be deported to their home country if possible, or to “safe” third countries that would agree to take them. Like Reform, the party says it would negotiate returns agreements with other nations, and threaten to withhold aid spending and visas from countries that decline to co-operate. And the party has already said it would end the UK’s 75-year membership of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) in a bid to thwart asylum appeals. Speaking to the BBC’s Sunday, Badenoch said illegal migrants should “go back to where they came from”. Pressed repeatedly to set out where people would go, she did not name particular countries, branding the question “irrelevant”, adding that concerned voters were “not interested in these sorts of questions”. She said: “I’m tired of us asking all of these irrelevant questions about where should they go. “They will go back to where they should do or another country, but they should not be here. “We cannot have a situation where we cannot deport people, we don’t know where they will go so they can stay here. “That is basically inviting every single person across the world to our shores because we don’t know where they would go after. That is a defeatist attitude and I will not have that.” To speed up the deportation of illegal immigrants, the “Removal Force” unit would be funded at £1.6bn per year. Asked how hotels could be closed, before the unit’s funding had been increased, Badenoch said: “If you have a plan and you know that you will be making the savings, you can spend that money.” The announcement comes as Tory activists gather in Manchester for their annual party conference, amid dire poll ratings under Badenoch and questions over how they can head off a potentially existential challenge from Nigel Farage’s Reform UK. In her speech opening the conference, Badenoch said the Conservatives could win the next election by “combining secure borders with a shared culture”. She said: “Nations cannot survive on diversity alone. We need a strong common culture rooted in our history, our language, our institutions and our belief in liberty under the law. “That is what holds us together, and that is why borders matter, why numbers matter, but most of all, why culture matters.” The party said it wanted to take inspiration from the US, where President Trump has handed immigration enforcement officers sweeping new powers to arrest and deport undocumented migrants. The Tories said they would instruct police forces to check the details of everyone they arrest against biometric borders data, and would be allowed to use facial recognition without informing the public it is in use. It plans to expand an unspecified “existing facility” to detain migrants before they are removed, with a capacity for between 1,000 and 2,000 people. The party also plans to restrict the grounds for claiming asylum to those facing a threat from the government in their home country, excluding claims from those fleeing conflict or “less tolerant” laws on religion or sexuality. Key to the proposals is a plan to abolish the Immigration Tribunal, which hears challenges to failed asylum claims, handing the appeals process instead to a team of officials within the Home Office. The Tories also plan to abolish taxpayer-funded legal aid in immigration cases, with a document on the proposals arguing there “will be no need for lawyers” because claims would be “fairly assessed against the criteria”. The Conservatives’ plan comes after Reform UK made similar pledges over the summer to take the UK out of the ECHR and deport 600,000 migrants within five years if it won power. Badenoch sought to portray her party’s plans as more credible, adding that it was backed by “comprehensive legal analysis” in the form of a review by Tory peer and former justice minister Lord Wolfson of Tredegar. “Reform have nothing but announcements that fall apart on arrival,” she added. Challenged about her approach to formulating policy, Badenoch insisted the way she was going about changing her party would “pay off eventually”. The Tory move to leave the ECHR creates a key dividing line with the Labour government, which has opted against leaving the treaty but is reviewing how it is applied in UK law. Labour has also pledged tougher action to deal with small boat crossings over the English Channel, which are set to break record numbers this year. Labour recently set out plans to lengthen refugees’ route to permanent settlement in the UK in a bid to make the country less appealing to migrants, and has negotiated…

DSS Apologises, Releases Wrongfully Detained Journalists in Jos

DSS Apologises, Releases Wrongfully Detained Journalists in Jos

The Department of State Services (DSS) has released two journalists from Jay 101.9 FM in Jos, Plateau State, after they were wrongfully arrested on Saturday during President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s visit to the state. President Tinubu was in Jos to attend the funeral of the mother of Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC). According to security sources, the journalists — Ruth Marcus and Keshia Jang — were detained by overzealous operatives but were released after the DSS Director-General, Mr. Oluwatosin Ajayi, learned of the incident and ordered their immediate release. The Nation reported that the DSS promptly contacted Comrade Alhassan Yahaya, the National President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), to convey the Director-General’s apology over the “unfortunate misunderstanding.” “The Director assured the NUJ President that the new DSS leadership treasures the importance of a free press in a democracy and has ordered a thorough investigation into the matter. Any officer found culpable will be appropriately sanctioned,” the source said. The source added that the new DSS leadership is focused on correcting inherited excesses within the Service. “The DG is correcting the wrongs he inherited, including overzealousness. He has not hesitated to admit errors whenever the Service makes mistakes. We’ve seen several instances where the DSS apologised and even compensated victims of wrongful arrests,” the source added. He further described Mr. Ajayi as a “lover of human rights and press freedom,” recalling that the DSS previously apologised to the management of TVC over alleged harassment and intimidation of one of its reporters. The latest action by the DSS has drawn commendation from media circles, with the NUJ leadership urging security agencies to maintain professionalism and respect for journalists in the discharge of their duties.

Akwa Ibom Government Denies Withdrawing Security Aides from Former Governor Udom Emmanuel

The Akwa Ibom State Government has denied reports claiming that security personnel attached to former Governor Udom Emmanuel have been withdrawn. The State Commissioner for Information, Rt. Hon. Aniekan Umanah, described the reports as false, misleading, and politically motivated, insisting that no such directive was ever issued by Governor Umo Eno or any official of his administration. Speaking with journalists on Saturday night, Umanah clarified that the deployment, reassignment, or withdrawal of police officers lies solely within the authority of the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) and the State Commissioner of Police, not the state government. “I can tell you on good authority that the Governor did not issue any directive to withdraw security operatives from the immediate past Governor,” he stated. Umanah further explained that all former governors of Akwa Ibom State remain entitled to their legally approved security details, adding that no complaints or reports of withdrawal have been received from any of them or their aides. “To the best of our knowledge, there has been no complaint or report from any former Governor or their media aides about the withdrawal of security personnel. The rumour exists only in the imagination of those peddling it,” he said. The Commissioner urged members of the public to disregard the misinformation, reaffirming that Governor Eno remains focused on peace, unity, and good governance in the state. “Governor Umo Eno is committed to ensuring that all citizens, regardless of political affiliation, continue to enjoy full protection and the benefits of the law,” he concluded.

The Minister of Power and All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship aspirant in Oyo State, Adebayo Adelabu, has said his 2027 governorship ambition is motivated by his genuine love for the people of the state. Adelabu stated that his desire to lead Oyo stems from his passion to improve the lives of the poor, the less privileged, and all residents of the state. Speaking while addressing APC leaders, stakeholders, and members in the Oke-Ogun Zone 2 area, the minister said he is determined to ensure rapid progress and development across Oyo if elected governor. Adelabu urged members to remain united ahead of the 2027 elections, stressing that a divided APC cannot reclaim power in the state. “United APC owns Oyo State, PDP is a tenant in Agodi Government House. A divided house can never be victorious. APC will regain Oyo State in 2027,” he said. He also called for fairness in the party’s internal affairs, assuring members that there would be no imposition of candidates. “There should be internal democracy in our party, starting from our upcoming congress. San Siro Set for Partial Demolition as Milan and Inter Move Forward with New Stadium Plans

Milan, Italy — The iconic Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, more commonly known as San Siro, is set to be largely demolished following approval for AC Milan and Inter Milan to purchase the land where the stadium stands. However, a portion of the historic structure will remain intact. According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, the South-East corner of the stadium — including part of the ‘Curva Sud’ and the ‘orange’ stand — will be preserved as a nod to the venue’s rich footballing legacy. Roberto Spagnolo, project coordinator for Atalanta’s new stadium, detailed the demolition process in an interview with Gazzetta. “Demolition is carried out with mechanical machinery,” he explained. “First, non-concrete elements such as glass, barriers, and doors are removed. Then, giant hydraulic shears are used to dismantle the main structure, and finally, the concrete is separated from the reinforcing steel.” Demolition will begin from the roof and third tier, proceeding downwards. The new stadium is planned to be constructed in the current parking area adjacent to the Meazza, allowing matches to continue at San Siro during the build. The full demolition of the existing stadium is scheduled for 2031 or 2032, once the new venue is completed and operational.
