POLICE WELFARE: IGP TO DECORATE PROMOTED NATIONAL AWARD RECIPIENTS – As Police Service Commission Conveys Approval

POLICE WELFARE: IGP TO DECORATE PROMOTED NATIONAL AWARD RECIPIENTS– As Police Service Commission Conveys Approval

The Nigeria Police Force is set to take a bold and historic step in the direction of motivation, meritocracy, and morale-boosting as the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM, prepares to decorate select officers recently approved for promotion by the Police Service Commission (PSC) – officers whose conduct, courage, and character have stood out in service to the nation. These are not just promotions. They are public endorsements of excellence. A national salute to officers who, despite the odds, chose the path of integrity, went the extra mile, and reminded us all what true service looks like. Recall that in Press Release No. CZ:5300/FPRD/FHQ/ABJ/VOL.6/472 dated 25th July 2025, the Force publicly committed to recommending for accelerated promotion, any officer who had been named Police Officer of the Year or won in any of the Police award categories twice in two consecutive award years or received IGP recognition award twice in two consecutive years. That commitment made transparently and intentionally was driven by the IGP’s deep belief that rewarding excellence is the cornerstone of institutional reform. In line with that resolution from the Force Management Team meeting of 23rd June 2025, the names of qualifying officers were forwarded to the Police Service Commission and the Commission has now conveyed its approval. Accordingly, the Inspector-General of Police will, on Tuesday, 5th August 2025 by 12 noon, at the IGP Smart Conference Room, Force Headquarters, Abuja, decorates the following officers:• CSP Shaba Aliyu, Police Officer of the Year 2023, promoted to Assistant Commissioner of Police with effect from 31st December 2023.• SP Sentome Obi, Police Officer of the Year 2024, promoted to Chief Superintendent of Police with effect from 31st December 2024. These officers are not alone. Also benefiting from this wave of accelerated promotions are those who have won awards twice within the last two award circles and several Staff Officers at the IGP Secretariat, who have received multiple commendation letters in the past two years for distinguished service. To underscore the importance of this moment, the Inspector-General has directed the deployment of the police jet to convey ACP Aliyu Shaba, Police man of the year 2023 and CSP Sentome Obi, police man of the year 2024 to Abuja for their formal decoration by the IGP. In addition, the photographs of ACP Shaba and CSP Sentome Obi, who embody the highest ideals of courage and honesty, have been proudly displayed at the main entrance of Force Headquarters, as earlier directed by the IGP. Also directives have earlier been given to the effect that their pictures be displayed at the entrances of Zonal and States Command Headquarters This is what institutional pride looks like. This is how trust is built, from within. We stand firm in our mission: to build a force where honour is celebrated, service is valued, and excellence is not an exception but the expectation. To our officers across the country: this is your reminder that the job is not thankless. Your sacrifices are seen. Your integrity will not go unnoticed. And the Nigeria Police Force, under the current leadership, is committed to ensuring that professionalism is not just praised—but promoted. HerRights Watch slams Omoyele Sowore’s misogynistic attack on female police officers in a SaharaReporters article targeting ACP Bukola Kuti & DSP David Victoria.

HerRights Watch slams Omoyele Sowore’s misogynistic attack on female police officers in a SaharaReporters article targeting ACP Bukola Kuti & DSP David Victoria.

The group calls out Sowore’s baseless smear as a sexist attempt to demonize women in service, ignoring their merit and the fact that male officers dominated recent promotions. “Sowore’s narrative isn’t journalism—it’s character assassination wrapped in gender profiling,” says Convener Onyinye Eze. She challenges his credibility, citing his troubling attitude toward women and use of SaharaReporters for racketeering, not truth. HerRights Watch urges Nigerians to reject scapegoating women and calls for media accountability. “If promotions are flawed, fix the process—don’t malign hardworking women,” Eze says. Article below: Women’s advocacy group, HerRights Watch, has condemned what it described as “a calculated, misogynistic and false campaign” by SaharaReporters Publisher, Omoyele Sowore, to demonise women in the Nigeria Police Force, especially those serving in the office of the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun. The group described the article recently published by SaharaReporters, which sought to scandalise female officers, especially ACP Bukola Kuti and DSP David Victoria, as “a shameless, sexist smear built on malicious gossip rather than credible journalism.” The Convener of HerRights Watch, Onyinye Eze, in a strongly worded statement, expressed dismay at the choice of Sowore to turn what is essentially an institutional issue of police promotions, which is even overwhelmingly skewed towards male officers, into a personal attack on a few women who have distinguished themselves in service just because he seeks to impress his paymasters who have enlisted him to consistently attack the IGP. “Is Sowore suggesting that women have no right to serve in sensitive positions or be recognized for their exceptional work and contributions to society? Is he implying that a woman’s competence and progress can only come through illicit means? That line of thinking is not only deeply offensive but also regressive and dangerous,” Eze said.“ The criteria for accelerated promotion are well-established, for instance any officer who wins Police Service Merit Award on two occasions automatically qualifies. The lady in question followed the same process because she merrited it. Furthermore, contrary to the misleading claims in the article, she has been in service for well over 10 years. Can anyone reasonably claim that the same IGP has been responsible for all her promotions over the years when she has only worked with him for less two years?“As further proof of Sowore’s malicious intent, the report falsely alleged that the promotion list was skewed in favour of officers from the South West. However, a thorough review of the list shows that officers from the North Central were, in fact, the top beneficiaries of the exercise.” Eze pointed out that although the majority of officers promoted by the Police Service Commission in the referenced list were men, Sowore chose to build his entire narrative around a handful of women, dragging their names in the mud without presenting verifiable facts. “This is not investigative journalism; this is misogyny wrapped in a failing attempt to undermine the leadership of the police by targeting women as easy scapegoats and collateral damage,” she said. She further challenged the credibility of the so-called “sources” relied on by SaharaReporters, noting that the article dripped with innuendos, insinuations and stereotypes that demean the dignity of women in uniform, adding that “You cannot claim to be fighting for justice or accountability when your own report is a textbook example of character assassination and gender profiling.” Eze, while expressing deep concern, noted that Sowore has long demonstrated troubling attitudes toward women. “It is, unfortunately, not surprising that Sowore would take this path,” she said. “There have been consistent concerns about his treatment of women in both his private and public life. It seems the same disregard for respect and dignity in his personal relationships is now reflected in the way he engages through his platform.”“ Here is a man who calls himself a human rights activist, yet he cannot hide his hatred for women, especially those in positions of responsibility. His SaharaReporters platform is increasingly being used not to expose corruption, but for racketeering.”Eze called on Nigerians to reject the attempt to turn women into scapegoats in institutional controversies, adding that if the promotions in the Nigeria Police Force are flawed, the process can be addressed without maligning hardworking and deserving women who are caught in the web. She added that if male officers were promoted without merit, would Sowore insinuate they got there through sexual favours? In any case, it is on record that the incumbent Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, has refused every attempt to encourage indiscriminate special accelerated promotion in spite of the humongous pressure from every quarter. Hence, he set up criteria, guidelines and a process for qualifying for a special promotion which was strictly adhered to on this matter. She advised other journalists and media platforms to be responsible and gender-sensitive in their reporting, calling on media regulatory bodies, the Nigeria Police Force, Nigerian communication Commission and human rights institutions to investigate the defamatory content of the SaharaReporters article and protect women in public service from malicious attacks based on their gender. “ We cannot allow this kind of journalistic recklessness to go unchallenged. It breeds a hostile environment for women and reinforces the culture of impunity, where men can say and write anything against women without consequences. Enough is enough,” she declared.”

MRA Calls on Niger Governor Bago to Immediately Reopen Badegi Radio

Media Rights Agenda (MRA) has condemned the closure of Badegi 90.1 FM, a private radio station based in Minna, Niger State, on August 1, 2025, on the orders of the Governor, Mr. Mohammed Umaru Bago, describing the action as illegal, arbitrary and a dangerous assault on broadcasting freedom. It called on the Governor to immediately and unconditionally reopen the station and issue a public apology for the closure. Governor Bago reportedly ordered the State Commissioner of Police to seal off the station for alleged incitement of violence and directed that the license of the radio station be revoked, according to a statement by Mr. Bologi Ibrahim, Chief Press Secretary to the Governor. Mr. Ibrahim claimed in the statement that the “daily activities of the radio station have been unethical”, adding that “Governor Bago also accused the owner of the station of incitement of the people against the government.” Describing the Government’s action as undemocratic, illegal and unjustifiable, Mr. John Gbadamosi, MRA’s Programme Officer, noted in a statement issued in Lagos that criticism of the government is not crime as it is integral to any functioning democracy, in addition to the fact that it is a constitutional right and duty imposed on the media by Section 22 of the Constitution. In any event, he argued, the Governor lacks any constitutional or statutory authority to order the closure of any broadcast station in Nigeria or the revocation of the broadcasting license of any broadcast media organization. Mr. Gbadamosi said: “The Governor’s action amounts to an abuse of his office and a clear breach of the Code of Conduct for Public Officers under the 1999 Constitution, as amended, particularly Paragraph 9 of the Code. Should the Governor fail to immediately and unconditionally reverse his directives, we will take appropriate action to ensure that he is held accountable for this egregious violation of the constitutional right to freedom of expression and the corollary rights of the people in the State to receive ideas and information.” Citing the provisions of Paragraph 9 of the Code of Conduct for Public Officers, which states that “A public officer shall not do or direct to be done, in abuse of his office, any arbitrary act prejudicial to the rights of any other person knowing that such act is unlawful or contrary to any government policy”, he noted that there is no doubt that the Governor’s actions amount to a violation of the Code as he has no authority to order the shutting down of the station or the revocation of its license. According to him, Governor Bago knows or ought to know that he has no power to shut down any radio station or to direct the revocation of its license, as the regulation of broadcasting in Nigeria is not under his control or authority. He added that by nonetheless purporting to exercise powers and authority which he does not have, in violation of the rights of the owners and staff of the radio station as well as the access to information rights all the residents of the State who receive news and information from the station, the Governor has abused his powers, violated his oath of office and breached the Code of Conduct for Public Officers. Mr. Gbadamosi stated that although it is clear from the action of the Governor that he wants to have in the State only media outlets that will sing his praises, he has to curtail such desires and be prepared to tolerate criticisms and negative reporting from the media since the same Constitution under which he derives his powers and authority, which he is now misusing, has also given the media the duty and freedom to “uphold the responsibility and accountability of the Government to the people.” He said: “Governor Bago his advised to concentrate is attention and efforts on performing his functions and carrying out the responsibilities of his office in accordance with the Constitution, which states that the primary purpose of government is to ensure the security and welfare of the people, and allow the media to similarly perform the functions imposed on them by the Constitution, the most important of which are reminding the government of its responsibilities to the people and holding the government accountable to the people.” Mr. Gbadamosi urged the NBC to assert its independence in the matter by acting decisively against any attempt to illegally usurp its authority while also upholding the independence of broadcast media under its regulatory purview. He called on Governor Bago to immediately and unconditionally reopen Badegi 90.1 FM and issue a public apology to the proprietors, management, staff, and listeners of the station for the arbitrary and unlawful violation of their rights and also give a public undertaking to respect the independence and freedom of the media to operate without such arbitrary interference or political intimidation.
