DSS Rearrests Abdulaziz Malami After Father Attempts to Circumvent Bail Process

Abdulaziz, son of former Attorney-General and Minister of Justice Abubakar Malami, has been rearrested by the Department of State Services (DSS) at Kuje Correctional Centre in Abuja following his father’s attempt to secure his release outside standard procedures. The incident unfolded on Friday when Federal High Court bailiffs arrived at the prison with fully processed bail documents to facilitate Abdulaziz’s release. Sources said Malami allegedly requested that his son be quietly removed from the facility, sidestepping the usual formalities. Security officials, who had already placed the prison under heightened surveillance, were reportedly monitoring all movements in and out of the centre after receiving intelligence of efforts to arrange a discreet release. DSS operatives stationed around the prison screened every vehicle leaving the premises, intercepting and rearresting Abdulaziz shortly after he was handed over to those managing his release. A source privy to the matter said, “The bailiffs brought all the necessary papers on Friday, but Malami refused to follow proper procedures and wanted his son snuck out. The DSS profiled every car leaving and rearrested him.” A security insider noted that the move highlights growing concern within the intelligence community over what they described as “irregular attempts” in the handling of Abdulaziz’s release.

NDLEA Arrests Notorious Drug Kingpin Kanmo-Kanmo After 12-Year Manhunt

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has captured Lekan Jimoh, popularly called “Kanmo-Kanmo,” a feared drug baron who had eluded authorities for more than a decade over the killing of three NDLEA officers. According to the agency, Jimoh was arrested on Friday after operatives traced him to a hideout in Owode, Ogun State. Tactical teams moved in and took him into custody, bringing to an end a 12-year pursuit marked by violence, escapes, and repeated clashes with law enforcement. The arrest was disclosed on Sunday by the NDLEA’s Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, who said officers recovered 69 kilograms of skunk, a cannabis variant, from the suspect during the operation. Jimoh has long been linked to large-scale drug trafficking and was known for mobilising armed thugs to resist arrest. His name became infamous on June 15, 2014, when NDLEA operatives attempting to apprehend him were attacked by a mob allegedly organised by him. The incident led to the deaths of three officers, including Rabiu Usman Kazaure. Although Jimoh escaped at the time, the agency vowed to hunt him down. He again slipped through NDLEA’s dragnet on August 12, 2023, when operatives stormed his residence in Ado-Odo, Ogun State. While he managed to flee, officers recovered 139 sacks of skunk weighing about 1,922 kilograms. The property, said to have been used as a storage facility for drugs, was later forfeited to the Federal Government following court proceedings. The agency described his eventual arrest as a major milestone, stressing that fugitives would be pursued no matter how long it takes. Meanwhile, NDLEA operatives recorded several other arrests and seizures nationwide. In Edo State, officers raided the Arokpa forest in Uzebba, Owan West Local Government Area, arresting 53-year-old Isihor Edika and confiscating 320 kilograms of skunk and cannabis seeds. In Abuja, a 44-year-old woman, Yinka Agboola, was arrested over the online sale of illicit drugs. A search of her home in the Kaura area led to the recovery of 2.2 kilograms of skunk and quantities of cannabis oil allegedly produced in her kitchen. Another suspect, Tordue Pius Richard, 30, was arrested at his residence in Abacha Estate with 148.3 grams of cocaine and skunk. In Lagos, NDLEA operatives seized 118.1 kilograms of skunk from Dauda Kareem and Saheed Obisesan in the Fadeyi area of Mushin, while 116 kilograms of the same substance were recovered from a warehouse at the New Market area of Enugu State. Along the Onitsha–Asaba expressway in Delta State, two suspects, Zaharadeen Yahaya, 25, and Sanusi Maman, 23, were intercepted while transporting large quantities of controlled substances, including tramadol pills, codeine syrup, diazepam, swinol, and molly. In Oyo State, Adetunji Ahmed Abayomi, 33, was arrested at Moniya, Ibadan, with 321 litres of skuchies and 2.5 kilograms of colorado, a synthetic cannabis strain. Another suspect, Rasheed Ajao, 28, was also caught in Ibadan with assorted cannabis products weighing a total of 9.696 kilograms. In a separate raid at Agbeni, officers recovered over 52,000 pills of tramadol and bromazepam from a store belonging to Orji Edwin, who is currently at large. In Kwara State, NDLEA operatives raided a residential building in the Gamo area of Ilorin, seizing 42 bags of skunk weighing 387.40 kilograms. At the Apapa Port in Lagos, a joint operation involving NDLEA, Customs, and other security agencies uncovered 157,519 bottles of codeine syrup concealed in a container. In Jigawa State, an ex-convict, Gaddafi Ammani, 26, was arrested alongside his accomplice, Ahmed Sani, 32, at Nassarawa GRA, Ringim Local Government Area. Ammani reportedly attempted to escape by jumping across rooftops and threatened officers with a machete, injuring one operative before he was overpowered. NDLEA Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Brigadier General Mohamed Buba Marwa (rtd), praised officers across various commands for their efforts, urging them to sustain the momentum in the agency’s fight against drug trafficking. He described Jimoh’s arrest as a clear signal to drug lords and fugitives that justice may be delayed but will not be denied.

Tinubu Returns to Abuja After Abu Dhabi Trip

President Bola Tinubu has arrived back in Abuja after attending the 2026 Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week, where Nigeria and the United Arab Emirates concluded a major trade agreement aimed at strengthening economic ties between both countries. The President’s return was confirmed on Saturday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, who issued a statement on the completion of the trip. Tinubu had left Nigeria on December 28, 2025, travelling to Paris to complete the remaining part of his annual leave before heading to Abu Dhabi for the summit, which took place from January 11 to 15. The President also attended the same global gathering in 2025. While in Abu Dhabi, Nigeria and the UAE signed a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement designed to expand bilateral trade and investment. The agreement allows duty-free entry for thousands of Nigerian products into the UAE market and is expected to deepen cooperation in areas such as energy, infrastructure, agriculture, mining, renewable energy, and technology transfer. The agreement was signed on Nigeria’s behalf by the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr Jumoke Oduwole, while UAE Minister of State for Foreign Trade, Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi, signed for the Emirates. President Tinubu and UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan witnessed the signing. Speaking after the ceremony, Oduwole said the deal would open new global market opportunities for Nigerian exporters. She explained that Nigerian businesses would be able to establish offices and subsidiaries in the UAE, with business owners permitted to stay in the country for up to 90 days within a 12-month period. During his address at the summit, Tinubu announced that Nigeria plans to mobilise up to $30bn annually in climate and green industrial financing to support energy transition reforms and expand electricity access nationwide. He revealed that the Climate Investment Platform is targeting $500m for climate-resilient infrastructure, while the National Climate Change Fund is seeking a $2bn capital base. The President also disclosed plans to host a joint Nigeria-UAE Investopia summit in Lagos in February, expected to attract investors, policymakers, innovators, and business leaders to explore investment opportunities in Nigeria. Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week is an annual global initiative organised by the UAE to promote dialogue on sustainability, climate action, and energy transition. The 2026 edition, themed “The Nexus of Next: All Systems Go,” focused on coordinated efforts across finance, technology, energy, and human capital to drive sustainable development.

248 Passengers Escape Death As Qatar Airways Plane Makes Emergency Landing In Lagos

At least 248 passengers narrowly avoided a disaster on Friday night when a Qatar Airways flight experienced a technical fault mid-air and was forced to make an emergency landing at Lagos’ Murtala Muhammed International Airport. The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) confirmed that the aircraft, carrying 248 passengers and 12 crew members, sent out distress signals while flying within Nigerian airspace, prompting an immediate emergency response. According to a preliminary LASEMA report, the agency activated its emergency response plan after receiving alerts through its 767/112 toll-free emergency lines. Emergency landings occur when unexpected technical problems arise, with pilots communicating directly with air traffic control to safely guide the plane to the runway. “Following distress alerts received at the Command and Control Centre in Alausa, Ikeja, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency promptly activated the State’s Emergency Response Plans,” the report said. Eyewitnesses described tense moments as emergency personnel lined the runway while passengers braced for the unplanned landing. On arrival, LASEMA’s Lagos Response Team confirmed that the aircraft had safely touched down despite the technical fault. The report credited the pilot for successfully executing the landing under pressure. “The pilot executed a safe landing on the runway at Murtala Muhammed International Airport with LASEMA response teams and other emergency responders on standby,” it said. After the landing, the aircraft was checked by the pilot and engineering crew before being moved to the apron for a more detailed inspection and repairs. All passengers were safely evacuated, and no injuries were recorded. LASEMA noted that the plane sustained no major damage and that recovery operations had been completed. “The aircraft has been secured on the apron, recovery activities have been completed, and the rescue operation has been safely concluded,” the agency said. Emergency teams on site included LASEMA’s Command and Control Centre, LASAMBUS, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, and the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria. The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority confirmed the incident, with spokesperson Michael Achimugu stating, “I can confirm that there was an air return. Details will be communicated later.” Qatar Airways had not responded to requests for comment sent to its country manager, Ken Chirchir, as of the time of reporting.

Over 80 Militants Lay Down Arms In Cross River Under State Amnesty Programme

More than 80 militants have abandoned armed activities in Cross River State after accepting the state government’s amnesty programme, the Nigerian Army has disclosed. The fighters reportedly surfaced from creek hideouts in Akpabuyo Local Government Area in the early hours of Friday and formally surrendered at the Atimbo rear area during Operation Okwok. The Army said the group came from two different militant camps operating in the area. One camp, led by ThankGod Ebikontei, popularly known as Ayibanuagha, turned in 39 fighters. Another camp headed by John Isaac, also called Akpokolo, accounted for 41 fighters. The latter faction is commonly referred to as the Akpokolo Marine Forces or Border Boys. Along with the surrender, the former militants handed over a large haul of weapons and equipment. Items recovered included AK-47 rifles, pump-action guns, a G3 rifle, a Mark 4 rifle, several single-barrel guns, AK-47 magazines, speedboats, boat engines, a C4 explosive charge, ammunition, cartridges, and other assorted military kits, tools, and locally fabricated weapons. The development was described as a major step toward restoring peace in the state. “This voluntary surrender and embrace of amnesty by these former militants clearly demonstrates that sustained military operations, combined with constructive engagement and strong collaboration with the Cross River State Government and other security agencies, remain effective tools for restoring peace.” The Army also reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining security and supporting reintegration efforts. “We will continue to provide a secure environment while supporting all lawful initiatives aimed at reintegrating repentant youths and ensuring lasting stability across our area of responsibility.” After the exercise, the surrendered militants were handed over to the Cross River State Government’s Rapid Response Team and moved for profiling by the Department of State Services at Muka Sam Hotel in Ikot Ansa, Calabar. The Army praised the Cross River State Government for its role in the process, describing its involvement as critical to the success of the amnesty programme. “The proactive engagement, coordination, and support provided by the state government were instrumental to the successful execution of this amnesty programme.” Security agencies also urged residents to continue supporting peace efforts by providing timely and credible information to prevent a return to criminal activities.
