JAMB Officials Walk Out On Lawmakers During Heated National Assembly Hearing

JAMB Extends 2025 Admission Deadline for Public Universities to November 17

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has extended the 2025 admission deadline for public universities in Nigeria from October 31 to November 17, 2025. The extension, announced on JAMB’s official X handle on Sunday, comes following appeals from university administrators and challenges linked to new programme accreditations affecting the ongoing admissions process. “AVCNU has specially appealed for an extension due to the disruption caused by a number of factors, including a court order directing that the status quo should remain on the 2025/2026 admission list, which was only lifted by the same court on 28th October 2025,” the Board explained. JAMB recalled that the original deadline was set during the 2025 Policy Meeting on Admissions, held on July 18 and chaired by the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Alausa. The Board also cited the recent accreditation of 229 new programmes across 37 universities by the National Universities Commission (NUC) as a major reason for the shift, noting that admissions into these newly approved courses are just beginning. “In line with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, this move aims to expand access to tertiary education,” JAMB added. While commending universities for their cooperation, the Board emphasized that the new November 17 deadline is final. “This extension is to ensure that no institution or candidate is unfairly disadvantaged. It is the final adjustment, and all institutions must conclude their processes within the new timeframe,” JAMB warned.

In a sustained effort to rid Kogi State of criminal activities, troops of 12 Brigade Nigerian Army deployed at Forward Operating Base (FOB) Oguma have successfully rescued two kidnapped victims and recovered the ransom money meant for their release. The operation, according to the Acting Assistant Director Army Public Relations, Lieutenant Hassan Abdullahi, which led to the rescue of the victims took place on Sunday, following credible intelligence on kidnapping activities along the Itobe–Adumu–Ejule axis, as well as reports of relatives of some of the victims attempting to deliver ransom to secure their release. Troops acted swiftly on the information and projected a patrol to Achigili Forest to intercept the bandits. However, while en route to the location, the troops came under fire from the criminals. Presidency Debunks Tinubu’s Visit to US

The Presidency has refuted claims that President Bola Tinubu is scheduled to travel to the United States on Tuesday to meet Vice President J.D. Vance. Temitope Ajayi, Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, described the report as false and misleading in a statement shared on his official X account on Monday. He clarified that any visit to the White House would involve a meeting with US President Donald Trump, not the Vice President. “There’s a Sahara Reporters story that President Tinubu is going to the U.S. on Tuesday to see U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance. That story is not true. I can see that the fake news by Sahara has become the basis for some uninformed commentaries since yesterday. If President Tinubu is going to the White House, he won’t be going to see a Vice President,” Ajayi wrote. Earlier, the Presidency, through Special Adviser on Policy Communication Daniel Bwala, said that President Tinubu and President Trump share a common interest in tackling insurgency and terrorism. He noted that a meeting could take place either in Abuja or Washington, D.C., in the coming days. Bwala added: “Both President @officialABAT and President @realDonaldTrump have shared interest in the fight against insurgency and all forms of terrorism against humanity. President Trump has supported Nigeria by approving the sale of arms, which President Tinubu has effectively utilized in combating terrorism, achieving significant results. Any differences regarding whether terrorists target only Christians or people of all faiths will be addressed directly by the two leaders during their meeting, either at State House or the White House.”

U.S. Court Jails Five Nigerians for $17M Fraud Scheme Targeting Elderly Victims

Court Compels FG to Reinstate Yakubu, Orders N19m Entitlement Payment Within 30 Days

The Presiding Judge, Jos Judicial Division of the National Industrial Court, Hon. Justice Ibrahim Galadima has set aside Mr Yakubu, a Senior Staff calibre, indefinitely suspension from work without pay for a period above two (2) months specified under the Conditions of Service and the Federal Public Service Rules for being improper, wrongful, unconstitutional, null and void. The Court granted a mandatory order compelling the Government of the Federation of Nigeria, Attorney General of the Federation, the Minister, Federal Ministry of Science and Technology, Federal Civil Service Commission and Nigerian Institute of Leather and Science Technology to reinstate Mr Yakubu to his employment with full benefits within 14 days. Justice Galadima ordered the Government of The Federation of Nigeria, Attorney General of The Federation, The Minister, Federal Ministry of Science And Technology, Federal Civil Service Commission And Nigerian Institute of Leather And Science Technology to pay Mr. Yakubu the sum of N5.8m representing all his salaries, entitlements and emoluments due to him from the time of the purported suspension 1st March 2018 up to July 2020, N732k Unremitted Pensions Deductions, N6.6m Liability Claims, N470k Promotion Arrears balance deliberately left unpaid by the Nigerian Institute of Leather And Science Technology to the claimant to date and the sum of N1m Cost of Action within 30 days. From facts, the claimant- Mr Yakubu had submitted that he sent a bulk WhatsApp message that was offensive, that he immediately issued a general and personal apology, but one staff member remained dissatisfied. Mr Yakubu averred that on October 9, 2017, the Federal Civil Service Commission and the Nigerian Institute of Leather and Science Technology imposed disciplinary sanctions—a strong warning and a transfer to another Extension Centre on him as punishment. Mr Yakubu submitted that to his surprise, on 28th February 2018, he was orally invited to meet with the Director of Admin, for a meeting slated for 10:00 am on 1st March 2018 in Kaduna, and no one appeared until 2:00 pm, and he returned to Jos with growing concerns. Unexpectedly, Mr Yakubu stated that a suspension letter dated 27th February 2018 was received on 6th March 2018, indefinitely suspending him from work without pay, on the allegation that he had re-circulated the controversial WhatsApp message and had ignored an official invitation that was never properly delivered to him. In defence, the 1st and 2nd defendants- Government of the Federation of Nigeria, Attorney General of the Federation, were jointly represented by counsel and attended every court session, but failed to file any pleadings throughout the entire trial. The 3rd and 5th defendants- The Minister, Federal Ministry of Science and Technology and Nigerian Institute of Leather and Science Technology, who were also jointly represented by counsel, were the only parties that fully filed their defence processes and properly joined issues with Mr Yakubu. Ultimately, none of the defendants presented any witnesses in support of their defence throughout the trial. In opposition, Yakubu’s counsel, Olufemi Olubiyi, Esq., argued that any measure taken against Mr Yakubu must observe the prescribed statutory procedures to the letter, and any departure from those procedures renders the action null and void, and urged the Court to grant the reliefs sought. In a well-considered judgment, the Presiding Judge, Justice Ibrahim Galadima, affirmed that the relationship between the parties in the case is statutorily governed, that since Mr Yakubu’s employment falls under the Public Service Rules, disciplinary measures under a statutory regime must strictly observe all prescribed steps. The Court held that suspending Mr Yakubu without a hearing and ignoring the provisions contained in the Public Service Rules, the Nigerian Institute of Leather and Science Technology’s action were both procedurally and substantively flawed. Justice Galadima held that Mr Yakubu’s suspension was illegal, procedurally flawed, and unconstitutional. In addition, Justice Galadima granted an order of a perpetual injunction restraining the defendants, their agents, servants or privies, or anyone acting at their instance or instruction, from disengaging Mr Yakubu as an employee of the Federal Civil Service Commission and Nigerian Institute of Leather and Science Technology (whether by way of suspension or otherwise) after reinstatement and until the attaining of the retirement age of 65 years and/or upon putting in 35 years of service in line with the Conditions of Service and/or Federal Public Service Rules except and unless in strict compliance with due process as well as the Conditions of Service.

Media Rights Agenda Highlights Rampant Attacks on Journalists

Media Rights Agenda (MRA) today released a report titled “When Protectors Become Predators: The State Against Freedom of Expression in Nigeria”, documenting a disturbing pattern of attacks, intimidation, and harassment targeted at journalists and other media workers by security, law enforcement, and intelligence agencies, which are the very institutions that are supposed to protect them. The 129-page report, issued in commemoration of this year’s International Day to End Impunity (IDEI) for Crimes Against Journalists, highlights how those entrusted with maintaining law and order as well as protecting citizens, including journalists, have instead become instruments of repression, targeting journalists and other media workers for doing their legitimate work of informing the public and holding power to account. It revealed that government officials were responsible for nearly 74 percent of all attacks on journalists and freedom of expression recorded by MRA in Nigeria between January 1 and October 31, 2025, with the Nigeria Police Force emerging as the worst offender, accounting for 45 percent of all incidents of violation of media rights. Other perpetrators of attacks on journalists include operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS), various branches of the military and paramilitary agencies, as well as elected and appointed political office holders at federal and state levels, among others. According to MRA, at least 69 incidents were documented during the period under review, including arbitrary arrests and detention, physical attacks, threats to life, invasions of media offices, abductions, and other forms of harassment or intimidation of journalists performing their legitimate professional duties. MRA’s Deputy Executive Director, Mr. Ayode Longe, said: “The report shows that journalists in Nigeria are increasingly under siege, not just from criminals and insurgents, but principally from the very state institutions charged with protecting them,” adding that “This trend is a direct contradiction of the Government’s constitutional and international legal duty to guarantee the safety of media practitioners and uphold the public’s right to be informed. It represents a fundamental breakdown of law enforcement accountability and a direct assault on democracy and the rule of law.” The report noted that the climate of pervasive impunity for attacks against journalists has not only eroded public trust in government institutions but has also continued to fuel further violations as perpetrators are rarely identified, investigated or prosecuted, creating an environment of fear and self-censorship that is weakening democratic governance. MRA insisted that ensuring the safety of journalists is a legal and moral obligation of the Government, enshrined in the Nigerian Constitution, Article 9 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, and Article 19 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, as well as other regional and international human rights instruments. It therefore called on the Federal Government to establish and enforce accountability mechanisms for government officials involved in attacks on journalists; as well as reform and re-train security, law enforcement, and intelligence agencies to enable them to respect and uphold human rights and media freedom. The organization also proposed the establishment of a national multi-stakeholder protection mechanism for journalists and the adoption of urgent measures to put an end to the misuse of the Cybercrime (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act, 2015, as amended, and other repressive laws against the media. MRA called on the National Assembly to enact legislation that specifically criminalizes attacks on journalists and urged the National Judicial Council (NJC) to develop and adopt a system for monitoring the misuse of judicial processes to harass journalists while also taking measures to prevent such further abuses.
