Brian Brobbey’s Late Goal Secures Dramatic 2-2 Draw Between Sunderland and Arsenal
Brian Brobbey’s stoppage-time goal salvaged a dramatic 2-2 draw for Sunderland against Premier League leaders Arsenal at the Stadium of Light.
Sunderland had taken an early lead through Daniel Ballard, who capitalized on a free-kick from Robin Roefs to head past David Raya, ending Arsenal’s remarkable 812-minute run without conceding. The goal highlighted Sunderland’s status as one of the surprise packages of the season and sent the home crowd into raptures.
Arsenal responded in the second half, showing the composure expected of title contenders. Declan Rice intercepted a loose touch from Enzo Le Fee and played the ball to Bukayo Saka, who fired past Roefs to level the score. Martin Zubimendi then struck the crossbar, while Leandro Trossard appeared to secure the lead with a thunderous shot from outside the area that rippled the net.
However, Brobbey had other ideas. In the 94th minute, he pounced to fire home and snatch a point for Regis Le Bris’ side. Sunderland also had a near miss at the other end, with Ballard making a crucial challenge to deny Mikel Merino a potential winner.
The result maintains Arsenal’s seven-point lead at the top of the Premier League but sees Sunderland rise to third, setting up an exciting showdown ahead of Manchester City’s clash with Liverpool on Super Sunday.
