CAF Appoints Moroccan Referee To Officiate AFCON 2025 Third-Place Clash Between Nigeria And Egypt

The Confederation of African Football has appointed Moroccan official Jalal Jiyed to take charge of today’s third-place playoff at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations between Nigeria’s Super Eagles and Egypt’s Pharaohs. The encounter will take place at the Mohammed V Stadium in Casablanca, with kick-off set for 5 pm WAT, as both teams look to close their AFCON campaigns on a positive note after falling short of the final. Jiyed will be assisted by Zakaria Brinsi, Akarkad Mostafa and Hassani Khalil, while Peter Waweru Kamaku will serve as the fourth official. The video assistant referee team will be led by Algeria’s Lahlu Benbraham, alongside Haythem Guirat and Hamza El Fariq. Sinko Zeli has been assigned as referee assessor for the penultimate game of the tournament. Nigeria head into the playoff following a heartbreaking semi-final loss to hosts Morocco, where the Super Eagles were beaten on penalties after an intense contest. Egypt also narrowly missed out on a final spot, suffering a 1-0 defeat to reigning champions Senegal. Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle has stressed the importance of ending the tournament with pride and momentum, while Egypt’s Hossam Hassan sees the match as an opportunity to secure a podium finish and rebuild confidence.

Morocco 2025: Eagles and Pharaohs Lock Horns in Big Battle for the Bronze Medals

Neither Nigeria’s Super Eagles nor the Pharaohs of Egypt will approach Saturday’s bronze-medal match of the 35th Africa Cup of Nations with a carefree attitude or in a state of absent-mindedness. Both continental powerhouses, with 10 AFCON titles between them, arrived in the Kingdom of Morocco late last year with determination to win another AFCON title. However, their campaigns stuttered at the semi-final stage, with the Pharaohs upended by the Lions of Teranga in Tangier, and the Super Eagles pipped in a penalty shootout in Rabat. While Egypt legend Mohamed Salah and Nigeria’s star-boy Victor Osimhen continue to rue the absence of the AFCON gold medal in their collection, Saturday’s confrontation provides the opportunity for a consolation prize in African football’s flagship championship. With a total of 14 goals in their six matches and unbeaten in regulation time, the Super Eagles will feel hard-done-by not reaching the Final. However, words of encouragement from here and there, far and near, have enabled them to quickly pick up their morale from the floor. The team trained on arrival in Casablanca on Thursday evening, and are scheduled for the official training at the Raja Oasis (training ground of top African club Raja Casablanca) on Friday evening. Incidentally, Egypt and Nigeria have the highest tally of AFCON bronze medals, with the Super Eagles having won eight times and Egypt six times. Victory for Nigeria will put daylight between the two teams on this score, while victory for Egypt will further narrow the gap between both teams. Remarkably, Nigeria, which has never lost an AFCON bronze-medal match, won its first bronze in 1976 at the expense of Egypt. A brace by Haruna Ilerika and an excellent strike by Mudashiru Lawal (both of blessed memory) handed Nigeria a 3-2 win in Addis Ababa. Nigeria’s last AFCON bronze-medal accomplishment was realized in Egypt, when Odion Ighalo’s 2nd minute strike was enough to pip Tunisia in Cairo. Nigeria also won the bronze medal in 1978 (declared winner following abandonment of the bronze-medal match by Tunisia), in 1992 (after 2-1 defeat of Cameroon in Dakar), in 2002 (after 1-0 defeat of hosts Mali in Mopti), in 2004 (after 2-1 defeat of Mali in Monastir), in 2006 (after a lone-goal defeat of Senegal Cairo) and in 2010 (after a lone-goal defeat of Algeria in Benguela). Saturday’s encounter will be the 25th clash between both countries at senior level. For context, it will be their 10th confrontation at the Africa Cup of Nations, with Nigeria having won five of the previous nine, with two matches drawn (scoreless draws in Rabat in 1988 and in Tunis six years later). Perhaps their most memorable encounter at the AFCON was the semi-final battle in Abidjan in 1984, when the Eagles came from two goals down to tie the game (thanks to a penalty by Stephen Keshi just before half time and a sublime header by Bala Ali in the second half). Nigeria went on to win the game 8-7 after a penalty shootout. Their most recent clash at the AFCON was in a group phase match in the northern Cameroonian town of Garoua in January 2022, when Kelechi Iheanacho’s first-half goal separated both teams. Venue is the elegant Stade Mohamed V in Casablanca, with kick off set for 5pm. Father Cries Out As Nine-Month-Old Twins Die After Immunisation At Lagos Health Centre

A grieving father, Samuel Alozie, popularly known on TikTok as Promise Samuel, has shared a heartbreaking account of how his nine-month-old identical twin sons, Testimony and Timothy, allegedly died less than 24 hours after receiving injections at a primary health care centre in Lagos. The tragedy came to public attention after Alozie posted a viral video showing the lifeless bodies of his twins placed in separate body bags. In a follow-up video, he explained that he took the babies for routine immunisation on the morning of December 24, 2025. According to him, the twins began showing unusual reactions shortly after the injections, becoming extremely weak and inactive. He said they could no longer eat, play, or behave as they normally did. “It happened that the immunisation was on the 24th of December, and on the morning of the 25th, they died,” he said. Alozie explained that after noticing their rising temperature, he and his wife followed the nurse’s instruction by giving the babies paracetamol, but their condition did not improve. In an attempt to reduce the fever, his wife also bathed them with cold water, yet their health continued to deteriorate. “They were very weak after the injection. The drug weakened them to the extent they couldn’t eat or play like before,” he said. The twins reportedly died at the same time on Christmas Day, a loss Alozie described as devastating and unimaginable. “My children were not sick. They were strong and sound. Just nine months old, and now they are gone,” he lamented. He stressed that since their birth, the twins had never suffered any serious illness and that he had consistently taken them for routine immunisation. “From the day they were born, I’ve always taken them for immunisation, not because they were sick,” he said. Alozie also pointed out that the nurse who administered the final injections was not the usual health worker who had previously attended to his children. Reacting to claims allegedly made by the health centre that the deaths were caused by food-related bacteria, the distraught father dismissed the explanation. “How can food bacteria kill my children? The same food I have been giving them from one month to nine months didn’t kill them before,” he questioned. Although an autopsy has reportedly been conducted, Alozie expressed fears that the outcome might be manipulated to protect the government-owned health facility. He appealed for legal and public support, saying he lacks the financial capacity to pursue justice on his own. “Please, if you’re a lawyer or human rights activist, help me. This is government to government, and without support, I may not get justice,” he said. Despite burying his sons, Alozie said he remains determined to seek accountability, insisting that their deaths should not be swept under the carpet. As of the time of this report, the Lagos State Ministry of Health and the Primary Health Care Board have not issued an official statement on the incident or the autopsy findings. VeryDarkMan Calls Out Mercy Johnson Over Alleged Illegal Detention Of Lady

Social media activist VeryDarkMan has publicly called out Nollywood actress Mercy Johnson and her husband over the alleged arrest and detention of a lady who made a video accusation involving the couple. In a video shared online, VeryDarkMan said he began receiving several messages about a young woman who was allegedly arrested after posting a video based on claims she saw on an Instagram blog. He explained that the lady clearly stated in her video that her source was QTJuice and that she was not the originator of the story. “Alright, so, Mercy Johnson, a lot of people have been sending me DMs in respect of the girl that you arrested. According to them, they said it’s your husband that arrested the girl over a video that she made,” he said. VeryDarkMan narrated the allegation contained in the video, stressing that the lady repeatedly used the word “allegedly” and cited an online blog as her source. He added that shortly after the issue escalated, the blog reportedly went private and the lady deleted her video. Reacting to the arrest, VeryDarkMan condemned what he described as intimidation and misuse of police power, insisting that the matter should be treated as a civil case. “If you have a problem with the girl, take her to court. Na civil matter. Why are you using police to oppress her? You people should go and release the girl,” he said. He also referenced previous cases involving public figures and defamation, arguing that arrests are not the solution. “She said her source. She never said she was the one that made it up. This is intimidation and oppression. Using police to oppress. That’s what you are doing,” he stated. VeryDarkMan further warned that legal action would be taken if the lady was not released, revealing that her wedding was reportedly scheduled to hold soon. “We go send lawyer. We no dey beg. Let the girl go,” he added. Despite his criticism, VeryDarkMan acknowledged Mercy Johnson’s status in the film industry, saying, “I love you, Mercy Johnson. To me, you are the greatest actress of all time. But we will not allow this.” As of now, Mercy Johnson and her husband have not publicly responded to the allegations. Mother of Alleged Davido Daughter Demands Fair DNA Test

Ayo Labinjoh, mother of Anu, the teenage girl claiming to be Davido’s daughter, has caused a stir online with fresh statements about her daughter’s paternity. Taking over her daughter’s social media account to allow Anu to focus on her mental health and school, Labinjoh said she is currently traveling to Lagos and Ibadan. She accused Davido of refusing to communicate privately despite Anu’s request for a discussion and called for an independent DNA test. “This is Ayo Labinjoh. Thank you for all your DMs. I am currently on the road traveling on my way to Lagos first, then IB. I’m a business trader and travel a lot across West Africa. I have asked Anu to log out of this account and I will be taking over again full time. I want her to focus on her mental health and school work. She asked David if he wanted to talk to me but he refused. We could have worked out an independent DNA test for Anu,” she wrote. Labinjoh strongly disputed Davido’s claims that five DNA tests had been conducted, calling the reports “delusional.” She said, “To say you did 5 DNA tests, not even two anymore silencing us all these years is delusional. You want to contact us privately but tell people publicly that I’m a bitch and obsessed fan you paid off after 5 negative tests, call our child mad and bullied her to the core on January 15th, 2026.” She added that the family has yet to see any published results of these alleged tests. She also revealed plans to register Anu as a US citizen at the American Embassy using a Consular Report of Birth Abroad (CRBA), which requires acknowledgement of paternity or a DNA test. “We are ready for our 2nd DNA test supervised by David’s embassy. NOBODY CAN SILENCE ANU,” she wrote. Labinjoh further claimed that the 2014 DNA test was mishandled, saying, “The only DNA test was altered September 2014. There was no DNA swab. They took Anu’s blood and Davido’s blood was drawn separately in a room we were not allowed to enter. The false negative test with a big bag of money. There is no record of 5 DNA tests anywhere, and I never picked any hospital. Dr Adeleke picked the hospital lab and paid for it. It is not ours.” Her statements have reignited public debate, with Labinjoh insisting that the family seeks a fair and transparent DNA test to finally settle the paternity question.

KWAM1 Writes Again to Ogun Governor, Demands Cancellation of Awujale Nomination Exercise

Popular Fuji musician Alhaji Wasiu Ayinde, widely known as KWAM1, has for the second time written to Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, claiming he was excluded from the ongoing selection of the next Awujale of Ijebu and urging the process to be annulled to prevent legal disputes. In a letter dated January 14, 2026, and sent through his lawyer Dr. Wahab Shittu, KWAM1 called on the governor to declare the Fusengbuwa Ruling House’s January 12 nomination meeting null and void, alleging it violated the Ogun State Obas and Chiefs Law 2021. He criticized what he described as the “imposition of a delegate system” and the exclusion of some eligible members from the meeting, calling it an arbitrary exercise that undermined the ruling house’s statutory duty to conduct a transparent nomination. Following the death of Oba Sikiru Adetona, it became the Fusengbuwa Ruling House’s turn to present candidates for the Awujale stool. KWAM1 said the Secretary of Ijebu Ode Local Government had directed the ruling house in a letter dated January 6, 2026, to convene a statutory meeting in line with customary laws and state chieftaincy regulations. However, KWAM1 alleged that at the January 12 meeting at Bisrod Hotel, he and other eligible members were prevented from entering by security personnel, including the police. Only selected “delegates” chosen by a faction of the ruling house were allowed in—a system he said was imposed without the agreement of other members. “The deliberate obstruction denied our client and other members the right to participate in the nomination,” the letter stated, adding that the exercise conducted without full participation is “procedurally defective, unlawful and null and void.” KWAM1 urged Governor Abiodun to annul the January 12 nomination and order a fresh, transparent, and inclusive process, ensuring all eligible members, including himself, can participate freely. Earlier, 95 contestants—94 princes and one princess from the Fusengbuwa Ruling House—were presented at the nomination meeting at Bisrod Hall, GRA, Ijebu Ode. The session was led by the Chairman, Otunba Abdulateef Owoyemi; his deputy, Prince Adedokun Ajidagba; and Vice Chairman Prof. Fassy Yusuf, with local government officials attending as observers. Owoyemi commended family members for conducting themselves peacefully, noting that the process aimed to select an Awujale who would lead Ijebuland to greater heights. KWAM1 has publicly declared his intention to contest, but the Fusengbuwa family insists he is not a member and therefore ineligible. He had previously approached the Ogun State High Court in Ijebu Ode seeking an interim injunction to halt the process, but the court dismissed the application. The musician later withdrew the suit without explanation. In a prior letter dated January 8, KWAM1 had also opposed the delegate system, arguing it disenfranchised members and violated both the chieftaincy declaration and Ogun State law. Prof. Yusuf dismissed the latest letter as “arrant nonsense,” while the state government has yet to comment.
