Adebayo Adedamola has emerged as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate for the 2026 Osun State election after a decisive primary in Osogbo on Tuesday. Adedamola received 919 out of 957 votes cast, while 20 votes were declared void. PDP primary chairman Humphrey Abba announced the result, saying, “One of the aspirants withdrew. The candidate that got the remaining votes is Adebayo Adedamola with 919 votes and stands elected and returned.” Despite having resigned from the party, Osun Governor Ademola Adeleke’s name appeared on the ballot. Sunday Solarin, Secretary of the primary committee, noted that votes cast for Adeleke would be “wasted,” urging delegates to follow instructions during the voting process. The exercise began after delegate accreditation ended at 11:35 a.m. INEC officials and a PDP committee led by Abba supervised the primary, while security personnel from the DSS, police, and NSCDC maintained order at the venue. Adeleke had formally resigned from the PDP on November 4, 2025, citing persistent crises in the party’s national leadership. His resignation letter, addressed to PDP Ward 2 Chairman Sagba Abogunde, expressed gratitude for the opportunities he received as senator and governor under the party. The governor’s spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, confirmed his resignation. Osun PDP Chairman Sunday Bisi had earlier explained that internal party disputes delayed the governorship primary originally scheduled for December 2. INEC’s timetable allows political parties until December 15 to submit the names of their candidates for the August 8, 2026 election, meaning changes could still occur if the party resolves its leadership issues.
