German Footballer Sebastian Hertner Dies After Falling From Ski Lift In Montenegro

The tourist who lost his life in a chairlift accident at a ski resort in Montenegro has been identified as German footballer Sebastian Hertner. Hertner, 34, died at the Savin Kuk ski resort near the mountain town of Žabljak after a double chairlift reportedly detached from its cable and struck the seat behind it. The incident occurred on Saturday while he and his wife were on holiday in the Durmitor mountain range, a popular winter destination in northern Montenegro. During the accident, Hertner fell from the lift and was pronounced dead at the scene. His 30-year-old wife, who was seated with him, was left suspended in the air and later rescued by emergency responders. She sustained a broken leg and was taken to hospital for treatment. Several other tourists were also caught in the malfunction, with at least three people stranded in their chairs for hours before being safely brought down by rescue teams. Hertner enjoyed a professional football career in Germany, playing as a defender for clubs such as 1860 Munich, Erzgebirge Aue and Darmstadt in the second division. He later went on to captain ETSV Hamburg in the Oberliga, Germany’s fifth-tier league. ETSV Hamburg confirmed his death in a statement shared on Instagram, describing the loss as devastating. “It is with great sadness that we announce today that our captain Sebastian Hertner has died in a tragic accident while on holiday. “We are stunned and incredibly sad. Adamawa Governor Fintiri Grants Pardon To Farmer Sunday Jackson On Death Row

Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri has approved a pardon for Sunday Jackson, the farmer who was sentenced to death after killing a Fulani herder during an alleged attack on his farmland. The decision was announced on Tuesday in a statement signed by the governor’s chief press secretary, Humwashi Wonosikou. “Adamawa State Governor, Rt. Hon Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri CON, has granted pardon to Sunday Jackson who was sentenced to death,” the statement said. “The pardon is in commemoration of Christmas and New Year celebrations.” The statement explained that Jackson, who is being held at the Kuje Medium Security Custodial Centre, was not the only beneficiary. “Jackson who is in Kuje Medium Security Custodial Centre has been pardoned alongside Joseph Eugene from the Medium Security Custodial Centre Yola new and Maxwell Ibrahim serving at the Medium Security Custodial Center in Kaduna.” Jackson’s pardon follows months of intense international attention, particularly from the United States. In November, the case gained renewed prominence after the U.S. designated Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern over allegations of killings of Christians. At the time, President Donald Trump issued strong warnings over continued attacks on Christians in Nigeria. U.S. Congressman Riley Moore also publicly demanded Jackson’s release, criticising his conviction for culpable homicide and death sentence by hanging for killing an armed herdsman who allegedly attacked him on his farm. Speaking on Fox News, Moore said, “But there’s a lot of things they can do, and one of the first steps is releasing Sunday Jackson, and another one is working with us to disarm these militants in the middle-belt of the country—the Fulani Islamic radicals that are there.”

Arsenal advanced to the EFL Cup semi-finals for the second year in a row after edging Crystal Palace on penalties following a 1-1 draw. The scoring began late in normal time when Maxence Lacroix inadvertently turned William Saliba’s effort into his own net in the 81st minute. Palace responded in stoppage time, with Marc Guéhi finishing Jefferson Lerma’s knock-down in the six-yard box to level the score. Both teams started brightly, with Tyrick Mitchell firing wide for Palace and Noni Madueke forcing a low save from Walter Benítez. Benítez was also called into action to deny a goal-bound header from Gabriel Jesus. Super Eagles Open AFCON 2025 With 2-1 Win Over Tanzania

Nigeria began their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaign with a 2–1 win over Tanzania at the Complexe Sportif de Fès on Tuesday. The Super Eagles took the lead in the 36th minute when Semi Ajayi rose highest from an Alex Iwobi corner to head the ball into the net. Ademola Lookman restored Nigeria’s lead in the 52nd minute, finishing from another precise assist by Iwobi after Tanzania had equalised. The match started with Nigeria pressing early, with Akor Adams’ header hitting the crossbar and Lookman’s 26th-minute attempt deflected for a corner. Victor Osimhen also came close before halftime but was stopped by Tanzanian defender Bakari Mwamnyeto. Tanzania responded shortly after the second half began, with Novatus Miroshi setting up Charles M’Mombwa, who calmly finished past goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali to make it 1–1. Despite missing further opportunities, including a disallowed goal for offside by Osimhen, Nigeria managed the closing stages well to secure the victory. The win puts the Super Eagles at the top of Group C, while Tanzania will aim to recover in their next match against Uganda.

Niger Imposes Indefinite Entry Ban On US Citizens Amid Diplomatic Tensions

Niger has imposed an indefinite ban on United States citizens, suspending all visa issuance and barring entry for Americans with immediate effect. The restrictions cover all forms of travel, including diplomatic, business, humanitarian, and tourist visits, heightening diplomatic tensions between Niamey and Washington. Authorities in Niger cited reciprocity and national sovereignty as the reasons for the move, pointing to what they described as recent hostile and punitive actions by the United States. No timeframe has been provided for a potential review or lifting of the ban. The decision comes amid strained relations between Niger and several Western countries following political upheavals in the Sahel nation. These tensions have already resulted in sanctions, aid suspensions, and changes to security and diplomatic partnerships. In recent months, Niger has sought to pivot its foreign policy away from traditional Western allies, strengthening ties with non-Western nations. Experts warn the ban could significantly affect humanitarian organisations, development agencies, and international bodies that rely on US personnel, while also complicating security and diplomatic cooperation in a region facing insurgency and political instability. The United States has not yet issued an official response, though officials are expected to raise concerns through diplomatic channels. Niger, however, insists the ban will remain in effect indefinitely, signalling a more assertive stance in its international relations.
