Ronaldo’s Al Nassr fires coach Castro

Cristiano Ronaldo’s Saudi club Al Nassr announced the departure of Portuguese coach Luis Castro on Tuesday, a day after starting their AFC Champions League Elite campaign with a disappointing draw. Monday’s 1-1 stalemate with Iraq’s Al Shorta in the Asian competition compounded a slow start to the domestic season with the current contract of Ronaldo, 39, due to expire next summer. “Al Nassr can announce that head coach Luis Castro has left the club,” said a statement posted on X. “Everyone at Al Nassr would like to thank Luis and his staff for their dedicated work during the past 14 months, wishing them the best of luck for the future.” Castro, 63, is the third coach to depart Al Nassr since Ronaldo’s groundbreaking arrival in early 2023 on a contract that was said to net him 400 million euros over two-and-a-half years. Frenchman Rudi Garcia quickly left that April, followed by a brief stint by Croatian coach Dinko Jelicic before Castro was appointed in July last year. The highly decorated Ronaldo is yet to win a Saudi trophy with the Riyadh club, with his sole silverware so far being last year’s Arab Club Champions Cup. Al Nassr, who finished a distant second in the last Saudi Pro League season, have drawn twice in three matches at the start of the new campaign. Ronaldo’s arrival heralded a rash of high-profile signings by Saudi clubs last year, with Neymar and Karim Benzema among those opting for the oil-rich, conservative kingdom.

Tinubu didn’t order Cardoso’s sack- Presidency

Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to the President, Bayo Onanuga has refuted media claims that President Bola Tinubu has ordered Olayemi Cardoso to resign his appointment as the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).  Onanuga, who was reacting to a media report on his X handle stated that the report is fake news as there is no iota of truth in it.   According to him,”It’s all lies. President Tinubu has not asked Yemi Cardoso to resign.” The report, Onanuga reacted to had earlier claimed the CBN Governor was fired due to his inability to stop the poor performance of the economy, most especially, the free fall of Nigeria’s currency, the Naira. The report also claimed that the President gave the marching order to Cardoso before he left Nigeria for China, rebuffing the pleas and pressure from the acclaimed Yoruba Elders who had risen to Cardoso’s support to save his job.  Cardoso, who reportedly secured the nomination for the plum job through the Yoruba Elders, allegedly lacks the knack to turn around the troubled institution and the poor economy he inherited. Cardoso’s undoing, according to insiders, is his inability to live up to the promise he made to President Tinubu in January to salvage the Naira and return it to between N700 and N900 to $1 before May 29, 2024, and also, save the economy from the ruins it currently lays. The naira began a historic fall against the dollar, droppingfrom the N950/$1 rate observed at the close of the week that Cardoso was appointed to N960/$1 by Monday of the week following his appointment as Nigeria’s upcoming central bank governor. It slipped further to N970/$1 in the early hours of Tuesday, the following day. This decline, which started immediately after his nomination, has seen the local currency dip, plummeting by 117.41 per cent to N1645.626/$1 as of September 12, 2024, nearly one year after he took over from Folashodun Shonubi. The continuous crash of the Naira and the poor economy prevented the usual celebration of the return to democratic rule on May 29.

Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania were awarded joint hosting rights for the 2027 AFCON in September 2023. Hosting CHAN 2024 will be a critical test run to ensure the three nations are fully equipped to handle the scale of a major tournament like AFCON. Lagos serves notice on Illegal Occupants of Maiyegun Waterfront scheme

To forestall the creation of slums, distortion of the Lagos State Master plan and erosion of the state coastal area, the Lagos State Government on  Saturday issued contravention notices to over 280  illegal property owners and occupiers in the Mayegun Waterfront Scheme, located in the Eti Osa Local Government area of the State. According to the Contravention Notices, the occupants are required to provide relevant documentation and approvals that justify their occupation of the properties in question within seven days of the notice, failure of which a demolition notice will be served on them. The over 280 properties, which included completed, under-construction, and undeveloped lands, were found to be without any government papers authorising their construction after a detailed technical assessment of the Mayegun Waterfront Scheme by the survey team of the Ministry of Waterfront Infrastructure Development charged with the responsibility of maintaining the Lagos State Waterfront Schemes. The Commissioner for Waterfront Infrastructure Development, Hon Ekundayo Alebiosu urged the property owners to voluntarily remove their structures before the expiration of the contravention notices served on them or come forward to regularise their documents if they have any to avoid penalty. He warned that all the illegal activities along the Waterfront schemes and corridor must come to an end immediately as the State Government will no longer condone or accept people encroaching on government properties, land and setbacks. Revealing that the State Government, through the Ministry, is currently sanitising the Okun Ajah waterfront scheme where similar encroachment is, Alebiosu noted that the State Government will not relent in its efforts to protect the State Waterfront Schemes and infrastructure while ensuring the safety of life and properties along the coastal area of the State.
