Two Suspects Arrested After Violent Attack On Fuji Star Obesere In Okitipupa

The Ondo State Police Command has confirmed that two people are now in custody following the violent attack on Fuji icon Abass Akande Obesere during a burial ceremony in Okitipupa.

The musician had earlier urged the state government to ensure those responsible were tracked down and prosecuted after his team was assaulted and his equipment vandalized.

Trouble reportedly started when groups of thugs stormed the venue, confronting Obesere and attempting to extort money from him. The confrontation quickly escalated, leading to a fight between the attackers and his band members. In the chaos, the cash Obesere received from well-wishers was allegedly snatched, and several members of his team sustained injuries.

Police spokesperson Olayinka Ayanlade confirmed the development, noting that the arrested suspects were found with exhibits linked to the attack. He added that investigators had already begun piecing together the events.

Okitipupa Local Government chairman Andrew Ogunsakin condemned the assault, describing it as disgraceful and a poor reflection on the community. He pledged to reach out personally to Obesere and assured that measures would be put in place to prevent such incidents from happening again.

Ayonla Authentic, Obesere’s media manager, provided a detailed account of the ordeal. He said that shortly after the performance, while preparations were underway to leave, large groups of touts surrounded them. Because he was holding the bag containing the event’s proceeds, he became a primary target. According to him, the attackers demanded the money and beat him when he refused, leaving him with a dislocated shoulder and multiple injuries. He explained that Obesere was also manhandled despite trying to appease the thugs.

The attackers eventually fled with the money, leaving the team to retreat for safety and medical attention.

The statement from Obesere’s camp condemned the attack as criminal and unacceptable, calling on authorities to fully prosecute those responsible and strengthen security at public gatherings.
