Elumelu Hails FX Stability, Says Tinubu Reforms Have Restored Investor Confidence

Tony Elumelu, Chairman of Heirs Holdings, has praised recent economic reforms under President Bola Tinubu, saying Nigeria’s foreign exchange market has achieved stability and predictability. Speaking after a private meeting with the President at the State House in Abuja, Elumelu noted that the reforms by the administration and the Central Bank of Nigeria have fundamentally changed the financial landscape, with access to foreign exchange no longer dominating business concerns. “I told someone, I said there was a time before if I got 10 calls on banking issues, seven of those calls were about how to access foreign exchange. Today, if you get 10 calls on banking issues, not even one is on FX, that market is totally sorted,” he said. He described the current business environment as encouraging for investors and entrepreneurs, emphasizing that predictability in policy direction is essential for economic growth. Elumelu credited President Tinubu for creating the enabling environment that allowed the CBN to implement reforms that have restored confidence in the economy. Beyond the FX market, the entrepreneur said he discussed with the President ways to further support small and medium-scale enterprises (SMEs), which he described as the engine of growth. He said Tinubu showed strong commitment to helping entrepreneurs through tax reforms and development finance initiatives. Elumelu also highlighted the President’s satisfaction with the performance of the Bank of Industry and his desire to expand the institution’s support for SMEs across the country. The Heirs Holdings chairman emphasized the need to improve electricity supply, noting that Tinubu is committed to fast-tracking the payment of outstanding debts owed to power generation companies. “Mr. President realises this, embraces it, and is committed to doing more, especially helping to fast-track the payment of the power sector debt so that the power generators can do more for the country,” Elumelu said. He stressed that settling these debts would boost electricity generation, expand access to power, and strengthen productivity and economic growth. Elumelu expressed optimism about the administration’s efforts to stabilise the economy, empower young entrepreneurs, and enhance the power sector for sustainable development.

Remi Tinubu Claims Some Abducted Chibok Girls Declined Rescue Efforts After Falling in Love

Nigeria’s First Lady, Remi Tinubu, has claimed that some of the schoolgirls abducted from Chibok in 2014 declined rescue efforts after developing feelings for the insurgents who held them captive. During a recent trip to the United States, Mrs Tinubu was quoted by The Free Press as saying that attempts to bring back the remaining girls became more complicated after authorities discovered that several of them were unwilling to return. “Even those girls kidnapped during Chibok, they are still trying to rescue them, until they learned recently that most of them fell in love with their abductors, so that’s quite difficult. You know, they refuse to come back.” According to the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women, 91 of the 276 students abducted from Government Girls Secondary School in Chibok, Borno State, are still unaccounted for. Mrs Tinubu, who attended the National Prayer Breakfast in the U.S., said she used the visit to address what she described as “recent hype on social media that there is Christian genocide.” The mass abduction took place in April 2014 when Boko Haram fighters stormed the boarding school, taking 276 girls in an attack that drew global outrage. Since then, about 189 of the students have regained freedom through military rescue operations or by escaping captivity. When contacted for confirmation of the First Lady’s remarks, the Nigerian Army said it could not immediately verify the claim. The Army spokesperson, Onyechi Anele, said, “How do I confirm this now?” and promised to check, but did not respond to subsequent calls. Last year, the National Coordinator of the National Counter Terrorism Centre under the Office of the National Security Adviser, Major-General Adamu Laka, reiterated that the government had not abandoned efforts to secure the remaining captives. “We have not given up hope on them; some of them were married to some of the insurgents. Some have come out. But let our focus not only on the Chibok girls because there are others that have been kidnapped,” he said while briefing journalists. More than a decade after the attack, the fate of dozens of the Chibok girls remains unresolved, as authorities continue efforts to locate and free them.

Makinde Elevates 14 Oyo Chiefs To Crown-Wearing Obas

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has elevated 14 High Chiefs and Baales in Oyo town to the rank of crown-wearing Obas, formally presenting them with Staffs and Instruments of Office at a grand ceremony in Oyo West Local Government Area. The colourful event, held at Oliveth Heights, was conducted on behalf of the governor by the Deputy Governor, Bayo Lawal, who handed over the symbols of authority to the newly installed monarchs. Among those elevated are Oba David Oyediran, Alaaguo of Aguoland; Oba Afonja Mukaila, Baba Eyaji of Oyo; Oba Samuel Odurinde, Alajagba of Oyo; Oba Isiaka Tella-Titiloye, Ona-Isokun of Oyo; Oba Fakayode Alowonle, Onimileke of Imileke; Oba Salawu Oyeniran, Onigbudugbu of Gbudugbu; Oba Olaniyi Adegboye, Oloodu of Ojongbodu; and Oba Tijani Ajeigbe, Alapa-Ara of Apa-Ara. Others are Oba Oyeleke Yusuff, Onidode of Idodeland; Oba Lamidi Jimoh, Iba Samu of Oyo Empire; Oba Ganiyu Busari, Alago-Oja of Ago-Oja Land; Oba Asimiyu Jimoh, Agbaaki of Oyo; Oba Jimoh Oyeleye, Alakeitan of Akeitan; and Oba Abel Oyekan, Elepe of Iseke. In an address delivered by his deputy, Makinde said the elevation reflects his administration’s resolve to strengthen traditional structures and promote peace and development at the grassroots. He described the new status of the monarchs as recognition of their leadership and a reaffirmation of the vital place of traditional institutions in governance and community building. “The State Government holds traditional rulers in high esteem because of their roles as custodians of culture, promoters of unity and partners in progress. “I want to urge you all (the monarchs) to uphold integrity, fairness and service to your people. Your reigns should be characterized by peace, inclusiveness and support for government programmes aimed at improving citizens’ welfare in their domains.” The Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, Ademola Ojo, described the occasion as historic and culturally significant. He noted that the Yoruba traditional institution remains one of Africa’s oldest and most revered systems, central to governance, unity and cultural preservation in Oyo land. “The beaded crown is a sacred symbol of authority, service and divine responsibility, and those who wear it are called to lead with integrity, courage and compassion.” He commended the governor for approving and sponsoring the mass coronation, saying it symbolises unity, continuity and renewal across Oyo communities. He also reiterated the state government’s commitment to collaborating with traditional rulers on conflict resolution, cultural preservation and grassroots mobilisation. Notable personalities at the event included the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, represented by the Asipa Olubadan, Oba Hamidu Ajibade; former Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Monsurat Sunmonu; lawmakers from the Oyo geopolitical zone; top government officials; and political stakeholders. Meanwhile, a legal tussle has emerged over the Baale Ago-Oja chieftaincy. The Supreme Court sitting in Abuja has been urged to restrain the Oyo State Government from creating, recognising or elevating the stool pending the outcome of an appeal. The motion, dated January 30, 2026, in Appeal No. SC/404/2018, was instituted by the late Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III. The applicant is seeking interlocutory and mandatory injunctions against the governor and the state Attorney-General. The filing asks the apex court to stop the government from “creating or re-creating, establishing or re-establishing the chieftaincy stool of Baale Ago-Oja” and from “appointing, approving or recognising” Alhaji Ganiyu Busari as holder of the stool. It further seeks to restrain the state from “recognising or further recognising, dealing or further dealing with” Busari as Baale Ago-Oja and from upgrading the chieftaincy from Part III (Minor Chief) to Part II (Recognised Chief). The motion also requests an order stopping “installing or crowning the appellant as the Oloja of Ago-Oja on February 13, 2026, at Olivet High School, Oyo, or at any other venue whatsoever,” and asks the court to set aside Oyo State Gazette No. 01, Vol. 50 of January 17, 2025, as it relates to the elevation of the stool. According to the application, “any attempt to revive, recognise or elevate a chieftaincy stool already declared non-existent by courts of competent jurisdiction amounts to a disregard of subsisting judgments and is capable of prejudicing the appeal now pending before this Honourable Court.” The appeal and the accompanying motion have yet to be fixed for hearing.

South African Woman Arrested For Killing Of Nigerian E-Hailing Driver In Pretoria West

Gauteng police have taken a female suspect into custody following the violent killing of an e-hailing driver in Pretoria West on Wednesday. Investigators say additional arrests are likely as the probe into the shocking incident continues. Police spokesperson Colonel Mavela Masondo revealed that preliminary findings indicate the driver was attacked by a male and female passenger who had booked the ride. “The driver’s hijacked vehicle and his body were later recovered in Atteridgeville on the same day,” Masondo said. The suspect is set to appear in Atteridgeville Magistrate’s Court on Monday, facing charges including murder and car hijacking. The arrest comes after a graphic video circulated online, showing a young man being violently assaulted inside his car. The footage, shared by anti-crime activist Yusuf Abramjee on X, shows a woman wearing a beige bucket hat and white t-shirt in the front seat while a man in the back repeatedly attacks the driver before fleeing. The victim has been identified as Isaac Satlat, a 22-year-old Nigerian national working as a Bolt driver. Satlat was reportedly a student with plans to graduate next month and move to Canada to continue his studies. Masondo confirmed that police investigations are ongoing and that more suspects could soon be apprehended. Earlier, the police condemned the circulation of the video, describing it as showing “what appears to be a gruesome murder of the victim.” Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni had assigned a senior detective to the case and assured the public that those responsible would be tracked down and held accountable.

Hilda Baci is celebrating another major milestone after receiving her third Guinness World Record certificate plaque, following her official confirmation as a three-time record holder in January. The chef shared a video of herself unboxing the plaque on Instagram, describing the moment as emotional and deeply meaningful. “Third time. Not because I planned it. Not because I felt ready. But because God allowed it. “Unboxing this record pack felt like reliving the moment all over again. The nerves. The faith. The sacrifice. The prayers. The belief that something bigger than me was happening. “I don’t take this lightly. I don’t get used to it. I’m just deeply grateful. Thank you to everyone who has stood by me from the very first ‘let’s try’ to this third ‘officially amazing.’” Earlier this year, Guinness World Records confirmed that her 2025 collaboration with Gino Nigeria earned her a new title. Nottingham Forest Appoints Vitor Pereira As New Head Coach

Nottingham Forest have moved swiftly to appoint Vitor Pereira as their new head coach after dismissing Sean Dyche just months into his reign. The decision followed a frustrating goalless draw against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Wednesday, a result that deepened concerns over the club’s slide toward the relegation zone. Forest’s hierarchy had already begun exploring alternatives, with Pereira quickly emerging as the preferred choice. The Portuguese tactician is no stranger to the Premier League survival fight. He previously took charge of Wolves in December 2024 and engineered a turnaround that ensured their safety. However, a poor start to the subsequent campaign — failing to win any of the first 10 league matches — led to his dismissal in November, despite the team later sitting comfortably 12 points clear of danger by April. Dyche’s departure makes him the third Forest manager to lose his job this season, after earlier changes involving Nuno Espírito Santo and Ange Postecoglou. The 54-year-old had only been appointed in October when Forest were 18th in the table. Before handing him the role, the club had considered approaches for Roberto Mancini and Marco Silva of Fulham. Forest’s recent form has been alarming, with just three wins in their last 13 matches across all competitions. They currently sit only three points above 18th-placed West Ham United, intensifying the urgency for a turnaround. Pereira’s immediate challenge will be a Europa League play-off first leg away at Fenerbahçe in Türkiye next Thursday. Beyond continental duties, his primary objective will be to secure Forest’s Premier League status — a hard-earned return achieved after a 23-year absence via the 2022 play-offs.

Igor Tudor Set To Take Over As Tottenham Interim Coach Until Season’s End

Igor Tudor has reportedly agreed to take over as Tottenham’s interim head coach for the remainder of the season, according to the Press Association. The move follows the dismissal of Thomas Frank on Wednesday after a 2-1 home defeat to Newcastle, which left Spurs 16th in the Premier League and just five points clear of the relegation zone. Tottenham’s players have been given time off until Monday, as the club has had no fixtures since their FA Cup exit in January, giving Tudor the opportunity to settle in before the squad returns. The 47-year-old former Croatia international was sacked by Juventus last October following an eight-match winless run. He has also managed Galatasaray, Udinese, Marseille, and Lazio. Spurs had been considering several candidates for the interim role, which will cover the final three months of the 2025/26 campaign. Reported options included former Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino, currently occupied with World Cup duties in the United States, as well as Marco Rose, formerly of RB Leipzig, and ex-Borussia Dortmund coach Edin Terzic. Tottenham will face Arsenal at home in the north London derby on February 22, marking Tudor’s potential first Premier League challenge in charge.
