Yobe Hisbah Commission Bans Physical Interaction, Private Chats Between Men and Women in Public

The Yobe State Hisbah Commission has rolled out new restrictions limiting interactions between men and women in public spaces, including private conversations in vehicles, as part of efforts to enforce Sharia principles. In a notice dated December 31, 2025, the Commission warned against what it described as reckless behavior during weddings, Sallah celebrations, and other social events. The rules prohibit men and women from sitting together in cars or on motorcycles, engaging in any form of physical contact, or holding private conversations disguised as casual chats. The directive, issued by State Commander Dr. Muhammad Yawudi Kale and approved by Chairman Dr. Yahuza Hamza Abubakar, aims to promote moral discipline and protect children’s upbringing. Parents, guardians, and community leaders have been called upon to support the enforcement of the measures, which are part of the Commission’s broader strategy to regulate public conduct and maintain Islamic values, especially during festive periods.

Appeal Court Affirms Death Sentence For Hanifa Abubakar’s Killer

The Court of Appeal in Kano has upheld the death sentence handed to Abdulmalik Tanko for the killing of five-year-old Hanifa Abubakar. Delivering judgment, Justice A. R. Muhammad dismissed Tanko’s appeal and confirmed the decision of the Kano State High Court, which sentenced him to death by hanging. The appellate court ruled that the trial court followed due process and properly evaluated the evidence presented during the trial. Justice Muhammad said the arguments raised by the appellant were unconvincing, noting that the prosecution proved its case beyond reasonable doubt. The court found no basis to set aside or interfere with the earlier judgment. The judge also advised relevant authorities to ensure the sentence is carried out once the convict has exhausted all legal options available to him. Hanifa was abducted in December 2021 by Tanko, the proprietor of Noble Kids Academy in Nassarawa Local Government Area of Kano State, where she was enrolled as a pupil. After demanding a ₦6 million ransom from her family, Tanko later poisoned the child with rat poison, leading to her death. The incident triggered nationwide outrage, particularly because of Hanifa’s young age and the betrayal of trust, as the crime was committed by the owner of the school responsible for her care. Tanko was arraigned on January 24, 2022, alongside Isyaku Hashim and Fatima Jibril, on charges including criminal conspiracy, kidnapping, unlawful confinement, and culpable homicide. On July 28, 2022, the Kano State High Court sentenced Tanko and Hashim to death by hanging, while Fatima Jibril was handed a two-year prison term.

Bauchi Governor Bala Mohammed Alleges FCT Minister Wike Plotting Against Him, Wike Denies Claims

Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed has alleged that political actors, including the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, are trying to damage his reputation and link him to terrorism financing and banditry. Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Thursday, Mohammed dismissed the allegations, insisting Bauchi remains one of the safest states in northern Nigeria. He accused Wike of attempting to destabilise his administration and described efforts to implicate him and his relatives in false corruption claims. “Somebody said he’s going to put fire in my state—FCT Minister Wike. A rising politician and opposition leader being accused of terrorism is very painful. Even my nephew was wrongly dragged into a corruption case,” Mohammed said. The governor said he had written to the Attorney General of the Federation and relevant agencies and would seek international protection, calling the situation “victimisation” and a violation of his fundamental human rights. Mohammed also labelled Wike an “undertaker” in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), claiming the minister is not a genuine member and works to undermine opposition leaders like him. He warned that political intolerance and impunity could have serious consequences for Nigeria. Responding during a visit to Abua-Odual local government in Rivers State, Wike rejected the allegations, saying Mohammed was trying to shift blame for his own political struggles. “I watched what the Bauchi governor is saying, that all the problems he’s having, that I’m the one because I said I will put fire in his state. If I had such power, why would he be fighting?” Wike asked. The former Rivers State governor maintained that Mohammed’s difficulties stem from internal PDP disputes in Bauchi, not from him personally. He also denied any involvement in the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) investigations targeting Mohammed’s associates. “This is to tell Nigerians to leave me alone and go face your own problems. I’m only challenging you as party leadership; I’m not interested in what you spend,” Wike said.

Defection: Labour Party Lampoons Peter Obi, Begs Nigerians for Forgiveness

The leadership of the Labour Party (LP) has lampooned the Party’s Presidential Candidate in the 2023 General Election, Mr. Peter Obi for defecting to the African Democratic Congress. This is contained In a statement made available by the Party’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, on Wednesday. Labour Party, in the statement took note of the defection of its 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi and a few of his supporters to the African Democratic Congress, ADC, saying they also took note of the lacklustre speech Mr. Obi made at the occasion, and wondered what new he intends to sell to Nigerians. The statement read; “For us in Labour Party, we wondered why it took them this long to make the move because we have since September 2024, parted ways with Peter Obi and some of his blind supporters in the National Assembly. We have patiently waited for this day. The party is finally liberated by this defection and as Party leaders, we count it as a blessing. “It will be on record that the leadership of the Labour Party had since urged Obi and his disgruntled followers to exit the party if they were unable to work with the leadership of the party. As a matter of fact, the party had suspended many of the lawmakers for anti party and was clearly going to mete the same treatment on the Presidential Candidate but for the intervention of some well meaning Nigerians. “The crisis we had in Labour Party was caused by Peter Obi and the Abia state governor, Dr. Alex Otti. It was them that sponsored the insurrection against the Julius Abure leadership. We had also expected Governor Otti to follow Obi out of the party. We are surprised that even though he has been suspended from the party, he is still loitering around. It is still not too late for him to follow his political leader.” The party also warned that the charade which took place in Enugu was largely boycotted by prominent political and traditional institutions in the South East. “All we saw were mere political spent forces who cannot win in their wards should there be an election. “This is clearly a danger signal that the Obi presidency (or Vice Presidency) is already a failed project from inception. He has clearly lost the charm that had endeared him to the people prior 2023. “He must be told that the South East lost out completely in the President Ahmed Tinubu’s government because they trusted and believed in him in 2023. While some states of the federation boast as much as five ministers, the entire states in the South East was given a paltry five ministerial slot. The marginalization against the zone has continued even in infrastructure allocation and I wonder if the Southeast will repeat the same political harakiri again. “Finally, we urge Nigerians to watch out for the Labour Party. We gave Nigerians a candidate we thought was good for the nation in 2023, but time has since proved that we made the greatest political mistake. We plead for forgiveness from Nigerians. We are already working out the best prospect that we hope will bring Nigeria back to its glorious days.”

Gabon Suspends National Team, Sacks Coaching Staff, Bans Aubameyang And Manga After AFCON 2025 Failure

The Gabonese government has suspended the national football team and dissolved the coaching staff following the country’s disappointing exit from the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). Head coach Thierry Mayouma, a former Gabon international with over 30 caps, and his technical team have been dismissed. In addition, captain Bruno Ecuele Manga and all-time top scorer Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang have been banned from future national team selection, despite missing Gabon’s final group game against Ivory Coast. Gabon lost their opening two group matches before blowing a 2-0 lead in their final game, succumbing 3-2 to the defending champions after Bazoumana Toure scored a stoppage-time winner. The defeat left the Panthers at the bottom of Group F. In a statement broadcast on national television, the government said: “Given the Panthers’ disgraceful performance at the Total Energies Morocco 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, and considering the multifaceted effects that are diametrically opposed to the values of ethics and exemplarity advocated by the Fifth Republic, the Government has decided: to dissolve the technical staff; to suspend the national team until further notice; to remove players Bruno Ecuele Manga and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang from the team. “Furthermore, the Government calls on the Gabonese Football Federation to assume all its responsibilities.” Aubameyang, who is Gabon’s all-time leading scorer with 41 goals, had returned to Marseille due to injury before the final group match, while Manga, the country’s most capped player with 105 appearances, was dropped after starting the first two games. The sanctions come after Gabon’s broader struggles in international competitions, including failing to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, despite winning eight of their 10 qualifying matches and losing to Nigeria in a play-off semi-final.
