Egyptian Footballer Dies After On-Field Collision

An Egyptian lower-division football match ended in tragedy on Sunday evening after a young player died from injuries sustained during play, turning a routine league fixture into a moment of national shock. Loei Ali, a player for Markaz Shabab Al Bokari, collapsed after a heavy challenge during his team’s fourth-division match against Sheikh Zayed in the Giza regional league. Club officials later confirmed that he died from complications linked to the injury. According to preliminary accounts, the incident occurred following a forceful collision involving the opposing team’s goalkeeper. Ali suffered a severe abdominal injury that caused a perforation to his stomach. He was rushed to hospital and taken into emergency surgery, but doctors were unable to save him. The match itself ended with a 2-0 victory for Al Bokari in the 16th round of the competition’s second group. Celebrations, however, were abruptly replaced by grief as news of the player’s death spread among teammates, officials and spectators.

Beatrice Ekweremadu Returns to Nigeria After UK Prison Term

Beatrice Ekweremadu, wife of former Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu, has returned to Nigeria following her release from a United Kingdom prison. She arrived at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja on Tuesday, January 21, 2026, where she was received by family members and close associates. Mrs. Ekweremadu completed the custodial part of her sentence over her role in a high profile organ trafficking case involving a 21 year old Lagos trader who was taken to the UK to donate a kidney to the couple’s daughter, Sonia. She was convicted by a London court in May 2023 and sentenced to four years and six months but was released early under a good conduct and prison decongestion scheme. Her return has triggered celebrations in her hometown of Mpu in Aninri Local Government Area of Enugu State. Her husband, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, however, remains in a UK correctional facility, serving a nine year eight month sentence. Attempts by the Nigerian government to secure his transfer home were rejected by UK authorities late last year. Another convict in the case, Dr. Obinna Obeta, is serving a 10 year sentence, while Sonia Ekweremadu remains in the UK receiving medical care.

Rare goals from Igor Jesus and Taiwo Awoniyi eased Nottingham Forest’s relegation fears in a surprise 2-0 win at Brentford. Jesus upstaged his fellow Brazilian striker Igor Thiago with just his second Premier League goal of the season, before substitute Awoniyi broke his duck for the campaign. They were vital goals for Forest as they restored their five-point cushion over 18th-placed West Ham. They also inflicted only Brentford’s second home defeat of the season, denting their unlikely bid for a place in Europe. Bees forward Thiago has been one of the revelations of the season, his 16 Premier League goals putting him behind only Erling Haaland in the scoring charts. Jesus, by contrast, came into the match having scored just once from 40 shots this term, giving him the worst conversion rate in the division. It was Thiago who had the first opportunity to add to his tally after just 90 seconds, but he could only prod Kevin Schade’s inviting cross wide at full stretch. At the other end Morgan Gibbs-White gave Schade the slip before cutting the ball back to Jesus, whose first-time effort was deflected wide. But Jesus made his mark in the 12th minute after Ola Aina raided down the right, beating Rico Henry and lifting a cross towards the near post. Jesus expertly controlled the ball on his chest as he held off Bees defender Nathan Collins, before spinning and lashing a superb volley past Caoimhin Kelleher. Brentford were dealt a double injury blow before half-time when, during the same passage of play, both defender Kristoffer Ajer and midfielder Mikkel Damsgaard sustained knocks and had to go off, with Sepp Van Den Berg and Dango Ouattara pressed into action. Ouattara almost made an instant impact after he was played through on goal by Mathias Jensen, but Matz Sels came out quickly to make the save. Then, in seven minutes of first-half stoppage time, Van Den Berg’s header from Michael Kayode’s long throw flew inches wide. Brentford poured forward in the second half but without Damsgaard, their most creative player, they too often ran out of ideas in the final third. Their best chance dropped, predictably, to Thiago, who controlled Vitaly Janelt’s late free-kick at the far post only to drill his shot wide. Forest made the game safe 11 minutes from the end when Awoniyi chased Gibbs-White’s ball up the line and outmuscled Van Den Berg. The 28-year-old raced towards goal, stepped inside Kayode’s last-ditch sliding tackle and slipped the ball past Kelleher – his first goal since undergoing surgery on a serious abdominal injury after colliding with a goalpost in May – to wrap up a priceless win for the visitors.

The club said on Instagram: “The football club “Kaysar” officially announces the signing of an experienced midfielder Victor Moses. “The former player of the Nigerian national team will defend the honor of the club from Kyzylorda in the new season. “Victor Moses is a football player who has played for a number of European giants and is known for his high-level experience. His joining the team “Kaysar” is a clear proof of the team’s goals for the upcoming season. “The club management and coaching staff believe that Victor’s experience and skills will have a positive impact on the development of the team and the growth of young players. “We wish Victor Moses good luck in the “Kaysar” team!” In a brief address to fans at his unveiling, the versatile winger said: “Hi Kaysar fans. It is a pleasure to be here.” And he added on Instagram: “Delighted to announced that I’ve joined FC Kaysar. Excited for what’s to come.” The Kazakhstan Premier League side finished last season in 11th position, six points clear of relegated Turan in 14th. Clubs in Kazakhstan are restricted to a maximum of 13 foreign players which, most teams use readily. However, Kaysar didn’t have one last year but have now added Moses to the arrivals of Thomas Jones from Chile, Serbian midfielder Nikola Cuckic, and Slovakian goalkeeper Adam Kovac. They play at the Gani Muratbayev Stadium which has a modest capacity of 7,000 and was built in 1968. While in Kyzylorda, Moses might want to take in the Baikonur cosmodrome, or the memorial complex of Korkyt Ata, a legendary figure in Kazakhstan.

African table tennis giants Nigeria and Egypt are set to spearhead the continent’s campaign at the 2026 ITTF World Table Tennis Championships, which will unfold in London from April 28 to May 10. A century after the inaugural ITTF World Table Tennis Championships were staged in England in 1926, the sport now returns to its birthplace for a landmark centenary celebration. JAMB Opens 2025 UTME Registration From January 26

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has announced that registration for the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) will take place from January 26 to February 28 at all approved Computer-Based Test (CBT) centres across Nigeria. JAMB Registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, disclosed this on Saturday in Lagos during a meeting with Commissioners for Education ahead of the 2025 UTME and Direct Entry exercises. He explained that the sale of UTME application documents, known as ePINs, will start earlier than the registration period, running from January 19 to February 26. “The actual UTME registration will take place from January 26 to February 28 at all approved CBT centres,” Oloyede said, adding that the mock examination selection will close on February 16. The sale of Direct Entry application documents and ePIN vending will commence on March 2 and close on April 25. Unlike previous years, UTME results for underage candidates will only be released after completing a thorough evaluation process to assess their eligibility for age waivers. The registrar stressed that all CBT centres will be monitored live from JAMB headquarters during the registration process. He warned that centres whose activities cannot be monitored centrally will not be paid, and any registrations conducted at such centres may be invalidated. Oloyede revealed that 924 centres have been screened and provisionally listed for the exercise. They will undergo a final test before receiving full accreditation to participate in the registration and examination. He also clarified that candidates are not required to pay any service charges to CBT centres, emphasising that only the registration fees approved by JAMB are payable. Addressing concerns about postings to distant towns, Oloyede explained that candidates will only be posted to towns they select during registration. He advised early registration to avoid being posted to less-preferred locations. “The choice of a group of towns implies that candidates can be posted to any of the towns in the selected group,” he added. The registrar warned candidates to declare their previous registration and admission history, noting that running more than one undergraduate programme concurrently is a criminal offence. Failure to disclose prior admissions will be sanctioned. On age requirements, Oloyede stated that candidates must be at least 16 years old by September 30, 2026, to be eligible for UTME. Underage candidates will undergo a rigorous evaluation and must score at least 80 per cent in UTME/A’LEVEL, PUTME, SSCE, and the exceptional candidate assessment to qualify for consideration.

The leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has been bestowed with an honorary citizenship of Georgia, a state in the United States, in a development that has drawn international attention. Kanu, who is presently serving a life sentence at the Sokoto Prison after being convicted on terrorism-related charges by the Nigerian government, received the recognition through an official proclamation issued by Georgia’s Secretary of State, Brad Raffensperger. The proclamation, dated January 16, 2026, also named the IPOB leader as a Goodwill Ambassador from the State of Georgia. A former Nigerian Ambassador to South Africa, Uche Ajulu, accepted the proclamation on Kanu’s behalf during an event held in Georgia on Friday. “I, Brad Raffensperger, Secretary of State of the State of Georgia, do hereby proclaim Nnamdi Okwu Kanu as an Honorary Georgia Citizen. “May this Outstanding Citizen be accorded every courtesy as a Goodwill Ambassador from Georgia in his travels to other states, to nations beyond the borders of the United States of America, or wherever he may hereafter travel or reside.
