Lt. A.M. Yarima, a young Nigerian Navy officer who recently confronted FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, reportedly survived an assassination attempt on Sunday evening. Military sources told Vanguard that Yarima was being tailed by unidentified men dressed in black, driving two unmarked Hilux vans without number plates. The vehicles allegedly followed him from the NIPCO Filling Station off the Line Expressway to Gado Nasco Way. The sources said Yarima noticed the pursuit and carried out a “strategic maneuver,” successfully evading the suspected attackers. The incident occurred around 6:30 p.m., and authorities are investigating the matter with “the seriousness it deserves,” though details have been withheld to avoid compromising the probe. The incident comes shortly after Yarima, while on duty with other security personnel, had a tense confrontation with Wike over a disputed land site in Gaduwa District. The encounter, captured on video, drew public attention and led the Presidency to halt the demolition exercise at the site. Following the confrontation, military veterans criticised Wike for verbally insulting Yarima and opposed any disciplinary action against him. Abiodun Durowaiye-Herberts, spokesman for the Coalition of Retired Veterans, warned that ex-service members would “occupy the office and residence of the FCT Minister” if Yarima were punished. He emphasized that military personnel owe allegiance to Nigeria, not individual officials, and said Wike must apologise for his remarks. “How can a public office holder call an officer ‘a fool’ on camera?” he asked, adding that such behavior undermines national institutions and the dignity of public office. Minister of Defence Mohammad Badaru Abubakar assured that no military personnel acting lawfully would face sanctions over the altercation. “We will always protect officers and our armed forces personnel on lawful duty,” Badaru said during a briefing for the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day celebrations at the National Defence College. “Any officer on lawful duty will be protected if he is doing his job lawfully and doing it well.” Veterans had previously vowed to mobilize and occupy the FCT Ministry if Yarima faced any form of disciplinary action.

A 27-year-old man, Chukwuebuka Eweni, has been arrested by New Orleans police after allegedly killing his father and injuring his two sisters in a domestic attack on Pebble Street. Family members told WWL Louisiana that the deceased, Samuel Eweni, was a computer sciences professor at Southern University at New Orleans. The two injured victims were his daughters. Relatives described the attack as sudden and shocking, noting that the suspect had a history of mental illness but had never been violent before. One of the injured sisters has since been released from the hospital, while the other remains admitted but is expected to recover, according to reports. The New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) confirmed that Eweni was located in Jefferson Parish and is in custody, undergoing medical evaluation. “Chukwuebuka Eweni has been located in Jefferson Parish. He is currently in law enforcement custody while undergoing medical evaluation at an area facility,” the police said in a statement obtained by PUNCH Online on Sunday. NOPD said the incident occurred around 9:59 pm on November 11, 2025. Officers responded to a report of “an aggravated battery by cutting believed to be domestic in nature.” Upon arrival, they found an unresponsive adult male with a fatal stab wound and two other adult victims with stab injuries. The two surviving victims were rushed to a local hospital for treatment. Detectives confirmed Eweni as the perpetrator and said arrest warrants have been issued for one count of second-degree murder and two counts of attempted second-degree murder. “This suspect is believed to be armed and dangerous,” the statement added. The Orleans Parish Coroner’s Office will officially identify the deceased and determine the cause of death following the autopsy and notification of next of kin.

Pedro described claims suggesting otherwise as “false, misleading and irresponsible.” He said the confusion began after actor Yomi Fabiyi posted online that the appellate court had cleared Baba Ijesha of all charges, including sexual offences involving a minor—a claim that was later shared by an online platform. “No such clearance occurred at any stage of the judicial process,” Pedro emphasized, warning that the statements distorted court records and could mislead the public. He outlined the legal timeline, noting that on July 14, 2022, the Lagos High Court convicted Baba Ijesha of sexual assault and indecent treatment of a child for incidents that occurred in 2021, sentencing him to five and three years, to run concurrently. “On June 28, 2024, the Court of Appeal, Lagos Division, delivered judgment on his appeal. While the court set aside convictions relating to alleged offences from 2013–2014, it upheld the conviction and sentence for the 2021 sexual assault charges,” Pedro said. He further explained that Baba Ijesha’s appeal to the Supreme Court was struck out on May 29, 2025, for incompetence, and a subsequent motion to file a fresh appeal was dismissed on October 9, 2025, leaving the Appeal Court judgment intact. Pedro stressed that Baba Ijesha was released solely because he completed his jail term, reiterating, “Mr. Olanrewaju James was not cleared.” The Attorney-General warned Fabiyi and any platform spreading the false narrative to desist, noting that the state could initiate criminal proceedings under Section 39 of the Lagos Criminal Law for publishing false news.

He highlighted a major peace mission he led in January 2021 at Sabon Garin Yadi forest in Giwa Local Government Area of Kaduna State. Gumi was accompanied by the then Kaduna State Commissioner of Police, representing the Inspector-General of Police. During the mission, over 600 armed bandits and their commanders attended meetings aimed at persuading them to surrender their weapons, embrace dialogue, and halt attacks on communities. “This meeting was part of a peace initiative where we preached to over 600 bandits and their commanders, who agreed to lay down their arms in exchange for security and basic amenities,” he said. The cleric stressed that all negotiations were conducted transparently, with the full knowledge and approval of the authorities, and remained committed to pursuing peaceful solutions to the country’s security challenges.

This problem we are having now did not start today; so many people have died in Plateau. Nigeria is crying out. A lot of blood has been shed, and we are not happy. He earned his first degree in Medicine and Surgery from Abia State University, Uturu, in 1998, followed by a master’s degree in 2004, a PhD in 2009, and a Master of Public Health in 2011. He began his career as a part-time lecturer at the College of Medicine, Imo State University, in 2002 before transitioning to a full-time role. In 2007, he joined the University of Nigeria, College of Medicine, rising to the rank of Reader and becoming Professor of Physiology and Clinical Measurement in 2013. Anyaechie has also served in key administrative positions, including Deputy Provost of the College of Medicine, University of Nigeria, from 2018 to 2022, Acting Provost at the College of Medicine, Imo State University, and as a visiting professor on a pro bono basis from 2020 to 2022. His appointment is expected to bring stability and renewed focus to Nnamdi Azikiwe University, with stakeholders expressing confidence that his expertise and leadership will guide the institution toward academic excellence.
