Pope Leo Begins Reign With Call for Unity

Pope Leo XIV formally began his reign on Sunday by reaching out to conservatives who felt orphaned under his predecessor, calling for unity, vowing to preserve the Catholic Church’s heritage and not rule like “an autocrat”. After a first ride in the popemobile before tens of thousands of people in St. Peter’s Square, Leo was formally installed as the 267th pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church and sovereign monarch of Vatican City at an outdoor Mass. Well-wishers in the crowd waved US and Peruvian flags, with people from both countries claiming him as the first pope from their nations. Born in Chicago, the 69-year-old pontiff spent many years as a missionary in Peru and also has Peruvian citizenship. Crowds chanted “Viva il Papa” (Long Live the Pope) and “Papa Leone”, his name in Italian, as his distinctive, open-topped popemobile weaved around St. Peter’s Square. Robert Prevost, a relative unknown on the world stage who only became a cardinal two years ago, was elected pope on May 8 after a short conclave of cardinals that lasted barely 24 hours. He succeeded Francis, an Argentine, who died on April 21 after leading the Church for 12 often turbulent years during which he battled with traditionalists and championed the poor and marginalised. US vice president JD Vance, a Catholic convert who clashed with Francis over the White House’s hardline immigration policies, led an American delegation alongside Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who is also Catholic. Vance briefly shook hands with Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskiy at the start of the ceremony. The two men last met in February in the White House, when they clashed fiercely in front of the world’s media. In his sermon, read in fluent Italian, Leo said that as leader of the world’s 1.4 billion Roman Catholics, he would not shrink before modern challenges and that, at least on social issues such as combating poverty and protecting the environment, he would continue the legacy of Pope Francis. Leo said the cardinals who elected him had chosen someone “capable of preserving the rich heritage of the Christian faith and, at the same time, looking to the future, in order to confront the questions, concerns and challenges of today’s world”. Francis’ papacy left a divided Church, with conservatives accusing him of sowing confusion, particularly with his extemporaneous remarks on issues of sexual morality such as same-sex unions. Saying he was taking up his mission “with fear and trembling”, Leo used the words “unity” or “united” seven times and the word “harmony” four times. “It is never a question of capturing others by force, by religious propaganda or by means of power. Instead, it is always and only a question of loving, as Jesus did,” he said, in apparent reference to a war of words between Catholics who define themselves as conservative or progressive. “Brothers and sisters, I would like that our first great desire be for a united Church, a sign of unity and communion, which becomes a leaven for a reconciled world,” he said. Conservatives also accused Francis of ruling in a heavy-handed way and lamented that he belittled their concerns and did not consult widely before making decisions. Referring to St. Peter, the 1st century Christian apostle from whom popes derive their authority, Leo said: “Peter must shepherd the flock without ever yielding to the temptation to be an autocrat, lording it over those entrusted to him. On the contrary, he is called to serve the faith of his brothers and sisters, and to walk alongside them.” Underscoring the unbroken lineage of popes from St. Peter, the choir chanted the traditional hymn “Tu es Petrus”, Latin for “You are Peter”. Many world leaders attended the ceremony, including the presidents of Peru, Israel and Nigeria, the prime ministers of Italy, Canada and Australia, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. European royals also took their place in the VIP seats near the main altar, including Spanish King Felipe and Queen Letizia. As part of the ceremony, Leo received two symbolic items: a liturgical vestment known as a pallium, a sash of lambswool representing his role as a shepherd, and the “fisherman’s ring”, recalling the first pope, St. Peter, who was a fisherman. The ceremonial gold signet ring is specially cast for each new pope and can be used by Leo to seal documents, although this purpose has fallen out of use in modern times. It shows St. Peter holding the keys to Heaven and will be broken after his death or resignation.

Lamine Yamal Agrees New Barcelona Contract

Barcelona president Joan Laporta has confirmed that Lamine Yamal has agreed a contract extension with La Blaugrana, while Frenkie de Jong is also in talks over a renewal. Hansi Flick’s men are currently in party mode after securing the La Liga title, triumphing 2-0 over Espanyol on Friday to officially eliminate Real Madrid from first-placed contention. La Blaugrana are now simply completing the formalities of their top-flight campaign, as they host Villarreal on Sunday before travelling to Athletic Bilbao next weekend in the final gameweek of the campaign. With the crown already wrapped up, attentions are turning to a busy summer of spending, selling and signing, and the powers-that-be at Camp Nou are working to tie down their prized assets to new contracts. Ballon d’Or contender Yamal has been one of the first in line for new terms, having enjoyed another extraordinary campaign with 42 direct goal involvements in 53 matches, 17 of his own and 25 assists. Two years on from making his Barcelona debut under Xavi at the age of 15, the still-teenage Yamal is already considered one of the best players of the world, even at his tender age. As things stand, however, the Euro 2024 winner could become a free agent at the end of next season, and there were rumours of Paris Saint-Germain submitting a sensational nine-figure bid for his services last year. Manchester City and Liverpool are also said to have been casting a watchful eye over Yamal’s situation, waiting to see whether the 2007-born talent could become available due to Barcelona’s delicate financial situation. However, Barca president Laporta has now confirmed that Yamal has put pen to paper on a new deal, and all that is left is the announcement, telling reporters: “Lamine Yamal’s contract renewal has already been agreed upon. Now all that remains is the official signing.” As well as tying down Yamal for another few years, Barcelona are doing their utmost to extend the terms of De Jong, whose long-term future has been the subject of intense speculation for a couple of years now. Then-Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag relentlessly pursued his former Ajax protege in the summer of 2022, and Barcelona even accepted an offer from the Red Devils, but De Jong refused to leave. De Jong initially struggled for starts under Flick, but he made the first XI for all of Barca’s games in the Champions League knockout rounds, and Laporta has confirmed that talks are ongoing to prolong his deal beyond 2026. “We’re working on renewing Frenkie de Jong’s contract. For sure he’s very excited to stay and we’re absolutely determined to do whatever it takes to ensure he stays,” the 62-year-old added. While Barcelona are working to keep De Jong in Catalonia, La Blaugrana are supposedly prepared to listen to offers for as many as eight players in the summer transfer window.

ISWAP Terrorists Massacre Over 50 Farmers in Borno’s Kukawa LGA

Suspected members of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) have killed at least 50 farmers in a brutal attack on Malam Karanti village, Kukawa Local Government Area of Borno State. The massacre reportedly occurred on Thursday after rival Boko Haram fighters ambushed the area, which had been under ISWAP control. The farmers had previously secured protection through a levy agreement with an ISWAP commander, Amir Akilu. However, in his absence, they were accused of espionage and siding with enemy factions. According to eyewitness accounts, the assailants rounded up the farmers—who were harvesting beans—and issued a deadly warning against escape. Survivors said over 50 were slaughtered on the spot, while others were abducted. “They gathered us and warned anyone trying to flee would be killed. Many tried, and most were slaughtered,” one survivor told reporters. The terrorists reportedly extended their assault to Dawashi community on Friday, though casualty details from that location remain unconfirmed. As of press time, there has been no official response from Nigerian security agencies or government authorities. This attack comes just five months after a similar massacre claimed the lives of 40 farmers in Dumba, also in the Baga axis. The latest violence underscores the persistent insecurity in Borno State, where farming communities remain vulnerable despite ongoing military operations aimed at restoring peace to the northeast.

Two Dead as Mexican Navy Ship Crashes Into Brooklyn Bridge

A Mexican navy ship has crashed into New York’s Brooklyn Bridge, leaving two crew members dead and at least 17 other people injured. The Mexican navy said in a post on X that the Cuauhtemoc, an academy training vessel with 277 people on board, was damaged in the collision. Video posted online showed the ship, which was flying a large Mexican flag, travelling in reverse and hitting the underside of the bridge. It sheared the top of its masts and drifted towards the Brooklyn side of the East River as onlookers scrambled away from shore. Naval cadets dressed in white uniforms could be seen dangling from the ship’s crossbeams after the crash. New York City mayor Eric Adams said two people had died and 17 others were injured, including two who were in a critical condition. Witnesses said they saw two people removed from the ship on stretchers. No one is thought to have fallen into the water. The 147ft (45m) masts were too tall to clear the arched bridge and toppled when the vessel, named after the last Aztec emperor, sailed in reverse underneath. The Cuauhtemoc, a Mexican navy training ship, struck the Brooklyn Bridge in New York on Saturday evening It was unclear what caused the ship to veer off course. New York police chief Wilson Aramboles said the ship had just left a Manhattan pier and was supposed to have been headed out to sea, not towards the bridge. He said an initial report suggested the vessel lost power due to a mechanical problem. Police commissioner Jessica Tisch said the National Transportation Safety Board would be taking over the investigation. Mr Adams said a “unified effort” was under way to “make sure that we look after all of those who were on the ship”. The bridge, which is a main conduit between Manhattan and Brooklyn, has since reopened with no major damage. The Cuauhtemoc is about 297ft (90m) long and 40ft (12m) wide, according to the Mexican navy. It was built in Spain and sailed for the first time in 1982. Each year, it sets out at the end of classes at the naval military school to finish cadets’ training. It left the Mexican port of Acapulco, on the Pacific coast, on 6 April with 277 people onboard, the navy said at the time.

The endorsement was announced following a high-profile stakeholders’ meeting held in Kaduna on Saturday. The meeting was attended by an influential delegation of APC figures, including all governors from the North West, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Deputy Senate President, former governors, the APC National Chairman, state party chairmen, federal lawmakers, ministers, and other top government officials. Speaking on behalf of the stakeholders, Kaduna State Governor and APC North West Coordinating Governor, Senator Uba Sani, read a communiqué that emphasized the zone’s full backing of Tinubu’s administration. He commended the President’s “purposeful leadership, bold reforms, and unwavering commitment to Nigeria’s progress,” particularly highlighting gains in the North West. According to Sani, Tinubu’s efforts have led to marked improvements in security, with farmers returning to their fields and displaced communities beginning to experience peace once again. The stakeholders further applauded what they described as unprecedented federal inclusion for the North West under Tinubu’s administration. They cited the appointment of 12 ministers from the region, strategic roles in the National Assembly, and key positions in the security architecture as evidence of Tinubu’s commitment to equitable representation. In addition, major infrastructure projects currently underway across the zone were seen as a transformative step toward development, fueling optimism about long-term regional growth. Concluding the meeting, the APC leaders expressed confidence that the party is growing stronger nationally, attributing its momentum to the public’s increasing trust in Tinubu’s governance and the effective performance of APC governors.
