Police arrest 30,313, recover 1,984 firearms, 23,250 ammuntion

The Inspector-General of Nigerian Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has revealed the arrests of 30,313 suspected criminals in the out-going year. Egbetokun made this revelation on Tuesday during a strategic meeting held on Tuesday, with senior police officers of the Nigeria Police Force. The meeting, which took place at the Goodluck Ebele Peacekeeping Hall, Force Headquarters Abuja, served as a platform for reviewing the achievements of the Force in the year 2024 while outlining strategic plans for innovation and adaptability as the Force prepares for the challenges of the coming year. In his remarks, the IGP acknowledged the hard work and dedication displayed by police officers throughout the year, particularly the significant accomplishments in crime reduction and community engagement, noting the importance of collaborative efforts in fostering trust between the police and the public. In the year under review, the Nigeria Police Force recorded major successes in tackling crime, leading to the arrest of 30,313 suspects for various heinous offences, the recovery of 1,984 assorted firearms, 23,250 rounds of ammunition of varying calibres, and the rescue of 1,581 kidnapped victims. The IGP emphasized that the Force will prioritize innovation in technology and operational strategies in 2025, learning from experiences and adapting as we move on. The IGP also encouraged senior officers to embrace modern tools and progressive practices that enhance the Force’s effectiveness in crime prevention and investigation. Stampede: Court remands Ooni’s ex-queen, Oriyomi Hamzat

The Chief Magistrate Court sitting in Iyaganku, Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, on Tuesday ordered the remand of the Principal of Islamic High School, Bashorun Ibadan, Mr Abdullahi Fasasi; the Chairman of Agidigbo FM, Alhaji Oriyomi Hamzat; and Naomi Silekunola, an estranged wife of the Ooni of Ile Ife, Oba Enitan Adeyeye Ogunwusi, at Agodi Correctional Centre. The court presided over by Chief Magistrate Olabisi Ogunkanmi, remanded the three defendants on a four-count charge of conspiracy and murder in connection with the children’s funfair stampede in Ibadan on Wednesday. The three defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges. The trio were arrested in connection with the recent stampede that occurred at the school, and they were brought to court on Tuesday by men of the Oyo State Police Command. The suspects were arraigned amidst heavy security. The premises of the court were filled with relatives of the defendants and other interested parties. The police prosecutor argued that the offence committed by the defendants was contrary to Section 324 of the Criminal Code, Cap. 38, Vol. II, Laws of Oyo State of Nigeria, 2000. Ogunkanmi ordered that the suspects be kept at Agodi Correctional Center pending advice from the State Prosecutor. The case has been adjourned until January 14, 2025.

Atalanta rejects Liverpool interest in Lookman

Atalanta are unwilling to sell any of their stars in the January transfer window, including Ademola Lookman, who is wanted by Liverpool. Premier League giants Liverpool have eyed Atalanta striker Lookman, but La Dea will not sell any of their stars in the winter transfer window. Tuttosport newspaper claimed that Atalanta have already ‘said no’ to a Liverpool request for the 27-year-old striker. The Nigeria international was named the Best African Player of 2024 and has contributed to impressive results from the Nerazzurri. Lookman has already scored 11 goals and provided five assists in 19 appearances across all competitions this term. Last season, he helped Atalanta win their first European trophy by scoring a hat-trick in the Europa League Final against Bayer Leverkusen. Atalanta have won ten consecutive matches in Serie A and are the current table leader. Lookman was in talks to join PSG last summer but eventually remained in Bergamo, where his contract expires in 2026. Liverpool’s domestic rivals Manchester City have targeted another Atalanta star, Ederson, but La Dea will keep hold of the Brazilian until the end of the season.

Pogba’s brother handed 3-year jail term for extortion

Six men, including the brother of France international Paul Pogba, were sentenced to prison terms of between three and eight years on Thursday after being convicted of extortion attempts targeting the footballer, French media reported. In 2022, Paul Pogba said he was the object of extortion attempts and threats from an organised gang, with his brother Mathias placed under formal investigation. Paul Pogba, 31, told the Paris prosecution office that he had been the target of extortion by childhood friends in March 2022 and had paid €100,000 ($104,000) to that group. Mathias received a three-year prison sentence, two of which are suspended, after he was found guilty of organised extortion and attempted extortion. He was also fined €20,000. The others include Roushdane K (eight years) Boubacar C (four years, two suspended), Machikour K (four years, three suspended), Mamadou M (five years, 12 months suspended) and Adama C (five years). Reuters has contacted Paul Pogba’s representatives for comment. The 2018 World Cup winner is without a club following the mutual termination of his contract with Juventus. He can return to competitive football in March after his ban for taking a prohibited substance was reduced from four years to 18 months.

Police arrest Ooni’s ex-queen, others as death toll hits 35

The Oyo State Police Command has disclosed the arrest of the ex-queen of the Ooni of Ife, Naomi Silekunola; the Principal of Islamic High School, Ibadan, Fasasi Abdulahi; and six others in connection to the death of some children during a stampede at a funfair in Ibadan, the state capital, on Wednesday. The ex-queen was named as the main sponsor of the event. More so, the number of children who have died from the stampede has risen to 35 while six others are critically injured, according to a statement issued on Thursday by the State Police Public Relations Officer, Adewale Osifeso. The event which was held at the Islamic High School, Basorun, Ibadan, was made available to 5,000 children but the number that turned up was reportedly over 7, 500, according to investigations by PUNCH Metro. Dino Melaye denies marriage plans

A former Senator and member of the 8th Nigeria National Assembly, representing Kogi West Senatorial district Dino Melaye has denied remarrying as claimed on social media. According to a post on Facebook, the Senator was said to be planning to solmnise union with a Lagos-based businesswoman at the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Ogudu on December 26. The invite indicated that Fuji Music Icon Wasiu Ayinde (K1 D’Ultimate) will be on stand to entertain guests at the wedding reception. The Senator however took to social media to deny the claims saying: “419 taken too far. “General Public i dont know this person talkless of marriage. “Even for film it can’t happen. “SDM is not available ooo.” In 2015 he defected to All Progressives Congress (APC) but returned to PDP in the build-up to 2019 elections after months of political struggle with Kogi State governor, Yahaya Bello. He was chairman of the Senate Committee on Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja and briefly chairman of the Senate Committee on Aviation in Nigeria.
