The Economic and Financial Commission has refuted media claims that former Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello is in the commission’s custody. The Head, Media and Publicity of Commission, Dele Oyewale made the rebuttal in a statement on Wednesday. “Media reports today (Wednesday) that a former Governor of Kogi State, Mr. Yahaya Bello is in the holding facility of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, is incorrect. “Bello, already declared wanted by the Commission for alleged N80.2billion money laundering charges, remains wanted with a subsisting warrant for his arrest,” the statement read.

Polish Border Guard Major Jacek Michałowski has explained that the use of handcuffs against Ukrainian boxer Oleksandr Usyk at the airport in Kraków was not a detention but a precautionary measure. They were later removed immediately. Michałowski said that Usyk and another man were withdrawn from the flight, and as a result, they lost their passenger status. He said that the men did not want to go to the gate when airport security called for them. “They did not want to go to the gate when called by the airport security service, so we were called to deal with this issue,” he added. The border guard reported that the use of handcuffs was due to the men’s excessive gestures. “The handcuffing was related to the gentleman’s posture; both men were gesticulating a lot because they were unhappy that they missed their flight. Therefore, the handcuffing was a completely precautionary measure; in the office, the handcuffs were removed immediately,” explained Michałowski. After Usyk was transferred to the office, the handcuffs were immediately removed.

Video footage of three-belt heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk in handcuffs and being escorted by police at John Paul II International Airport in Krakow, Poland, set off alarms, but has been quickly followed by statements that Usyk is freed. “Dear Friends: A misunderstanding took place. I was disappointed by this attitude towards our citizen and champion. “I instructed the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Andrii Sybiha, and the Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine, Ihor Klymenko, to immediately look into all the details of the incident at Kraków airport. Now, everything is fine, our champion has been released, and he is no longer being detained. Team Lagos continued to soar in the 2024 National Youth Games taking place in Delta State with the state athletes making an impressive sweep of medals. David Akinade has defied all odds by landing a gold medal for Team Lagos in the Shot Put event at the ongoing National Youths Games in Asaba, Delta State. Akinade showed resilience, putting up an impressive performance against his opponents in the Shot put F42/44 by throwing 7.74 in the event, defeating his counterparts from Delta and Edo states. Akinade coming into the games as a first-timer and winning a gold medal, shows the commitment of the Lagos State government to sports development and indeed, a state that nurtures and breeds talents providing an enabling environment for people with disability to thrive. Still in Athletics, the trio of Fashola Abiodun, Akinwuwo Oladeji and Soliu Simbiat also recorded four medals in their events. Abiodun won a silver medal in the 100 metres boys while Soliu Simbiat settled for bronze and Oladeji scooped two gold medals in the 100 and 200 metres respectively. Oladeji is now working hard to surpass the feat he recorded three years ago, with other events slated for tomorrow. In boxing, Lagos’s four pugilists, Agboola Oyindamola (F), Bello Olamide Lawal (M), Yakubu Sofiat (F) and Bolarinwa Michael (M) progressed to the finals in their different weight categories. The four pugilists will be competing in 40kg, 42kg, 42kg and 44kg respectively during the final bouts at St.Patrick’s College, Asaba, on Wednesday, Similarly, the Lagos Girls Basketball team has set up a final battle against the hosts, Delta. The girls will do everything within their power to upstage their opponents and add another gold to Team Lagos’ medal haul. NAFDAC shuts down illegal Cosmetics factory in Lagos

NAFDAC has shut down an illegal factory producing counterfeit cosmetic products at Benue Plaza, Trade Fair Complex in Lagos State. NAFDAC officers raided the location discovering various unregistered chemicals and packaging materials, along with expired products that were being revalidated for sale. The operation also led to the seizure of over 1,200 cartons of fake cosmetic products. Items including mini-mixing containers, unlabelled chemicals, batch coding materials, and thinners, were confiscated and moved to the NAFDAC office for further investigation. The Agency estimated the street value of the confiscated items to be around ₦50 million. NAFDAC urged the public to be cautious when purchasing cosmetic products and report any suspicious activities to the nearest NAFDAC office.

Onanuga, who was reacting to a media report on his X handle stated that the report is fake news as there is no iota of truth in it. According to him,”It’s all lies. President Tinubu has not asked Yemi Cardoso to resign.” The report, Onanuga reacted to had earlier claimed the CBN Governor was fired due to his inability to stop the poor performance of the economy, most especially, the free fall of Nigeria’s currency, the Naira. The report also claimed that the President gave the marching order to Cardoso before he left Nigeria for China, rebuffing the pleas and pressure from the acclaimed Yoruba Elders who had risen to Cardoso’s support to save his job. Cardoso, who reportedly secured the nomination for the plum job through the Yoruba Elders, allegedly lacks the knack to turn around the troubled institution and the poor economy he inherited. Cardoso’s undoing, according to insiders, is his inability to live up to the promise he made to President Tinubu in January to salvage the Naira and return it to between N700 and N900 to $1 before May 29, 2024, and also, save the economy from the ruins it currently lays. The naira began a historic fall against the dollar, droppingfrom the N950/$1 rate observed at the close of the week that Cardoso was appointed to N960/$1 by Monday of the week following his appointment as Nigeria’s upcoming central bank governor. It slipped further to N970/$1 in the early hours of Tuesday, the following day. This decline, which started immediately after his nomination, has seen the local currency dip, plummeting by 117.41 per cent to N1645.626/$1 as of September 12, 2024, nearly one year after he took over from Folashodun Shonubi. The continuous crash of the Naira and the poor economy prevented the usual celebration of the return to democratic rule on May 29.
