Bayern Munich were dumped out of the German Cup by holders Bayer Leverkusen as Nathan Tella’s second-half goal secured a 1-0 win for the Bundesliga champions on Tuesday, after Manuel Neuer saw the first red card of his 866-game career. The 38-year-old rushed out of the box in typical fashion 18 minutes in to the German Cup last-16 clash, taking out an advancing Jeremie Frimpong and seeing a straight red. Neuer’s sending-off brought Israel goalkeeper Daniel Peretz on for his Bayern debut, 18 months after joining the club. The visitors eventually broke through in the 69th minute, though, with Tella heading in an Alex Grimaldo cross. Tella had only been on the field for eight minutes having come on for injured striker Patrik Schick, who himself was subbed on at half-time. Home winger Michael Olise lashed inches wide in the fourth minute of stoppage time but Leverkusen held on to inflict a first domestic defeat on Vincent Kompany since he became Bayern coach. “We were too hectic and tried to go forward too quickly,” Leverkusen captain Jonathan Tah said. “At half-time, we said we need to be patient – and we did it. “The red card decided the game,” Neuer told reporters after the match. “It hurt us, and I’m sorry.” Xabi Alonso’s Leverkusen, who won an unbeaten league and cup double last season, are through to the last eight. Bayern have won the German Cup a record 20 times – 14 more than the next best – but have not made it past the quarter-finals since 2020, when they defeated Leverkusen 4-2 in the final.

Chukwueze fires AC Milan to Italian Cup Quarterfinals

Samuel Chukwueze scored twice as a rampant AC Milan crushed Serie B leaders Sassuolo 6-1 at the San Siro on Tuesday to reach the Italian Cup quarter-finals. Milan are now unbeaten in seven games in all competitions after an inconsistent start to life under new coach Paulo Fonseca. Sassuolo were powerless to stop the waves of Milan attacks and Fonseca’s side made it three in the 21st minute. Chukwueze swept a shot into the far corner after being teed up by Tammy Abraham to complete his first brace since scoring a double for Villarreal against Real Madrid in April 2023. The procession continued just two minutes later, as Ruben Loftus-Cheek drove forward and played in Rafael Leao to drill the ball into the bottom corner. Fonseca took the opportunity to give some key players a rest, including Leao and Loftus-Cheek, by making four changes at half-time. Milan scored again in the 56th minute as Davide Calabria netted his first goal of the season. Samuele Mulattieri grabbed a consolation for Sassuolo shortly afterwards, but Abraham scored his fourth goal since joining Milan on loan from Roma with an excellent back-heel finish. Earlier, Bologna reached the last eight for a second straight season with a 4-0 thumping of Monza. The two-time winners took control of the last-16 tie with two goals in the space of three first-half minutes through Tommaso Pobega and Riccardo Orsolini. Head Coach Bankole Olowookere has called 25 players to the camp of Nigeria’s U17 women national team, Flamingos ahead of the WAFU B U17 Girls’ Cup competition taking place in Ghana, 12th – 26th December 2024. The gaffer has drawn principally from the corp that not only reached the quarter-finals at the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup in the Dominican Republic some weeks ago, but also won the FIFA Fair Play Trophy of the competition. UK to deport Nigerian flambouyant Pastor

A Nigerian pastor, Tobi Adegboyega, has lost his legal battle against deportation from the UK following allegations of fraud and financial misconduct linked to his controversial church, SPAC Nation. Despite claiming deportation would breach his human rights, an immigration tribunal ruled that he should be deported to Nigeria. Adegboyega, 44, who is a cousin of Star Wars actor John Boyega, had argued that removing him from the UK would violate his right to family life under the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR). They claimed his work had been praised by prominent figures, including former Prime Minister Boris Johnson and senior Metropolitan Police officials, although no testimony from these figures was submitted. However, the tribunal noted that the Home Office presented a different narrative. According to the judgment, “Various manifestations of [Mr Adegboyega’s] church have been closed down, by either the Charity Commission or the High Court, because of concerns over its finances and lack of transparency.” SPAC Nation was shut down after failing to account for more than £1.87 million in expenditures, with allegations that the church encouraged members to take drastic measures to donate money. Former members accused the organization of being a cult, claiming impoverished individuals were urged to take out loans, commit benefit fraud, and even sell their own blood to fund the church. “It is alleged that the church leadership lead lavish lifestyles and there have, it is said, been instances of abuse,” the judgment stated. “The [Home Office’s] case before us was that all of this needs to be taken into account when evaluating whether [Mr Adegboyega] is in fact of real value to the UK.”

56 crushed to death in Guinean stadium

A controversial refereeing decision led to violence and a deadly crush during a football match in southeast Guinea, leaving 56 people dead, according to the government on Monday. The incident occurred during the final of a tournament held in honor of Guinea’s military leader, Mamady Doumbouya, at a stadium in Nzerekore, one of the country’s largest cities. The chaos began when some fans threw stones, causing panic and a stampede, the government reported. A video authenticated by Reuters showed people desperately scrambling over high walls to escape the scene. Prime Minister Mamadou Oury Bah condemned the events, stating that the stampede occurred during a match between the Labe and Nzerekore teams. He promised an investigation into the incident. EFCC makes single largest asset recovery till date

Justice Jude Onwuegbuzie, on Monday, December 2, 2024 gave a ruling on a final forfeiture of an estate in Abuja measuring 150,500 square metres and containing 753 Units of duplexes and other apartments. This is the single largest asset recovery by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, since its inception in 2003. The Estate rests on Plot 109 Cadastral Zone C09, Lokogoma District, Abuja. The forfeiture of the property to the federal government by a former top brass of the government was pursuant to EFCC’s mandate and policy directive of ensuring that the corrupt and fraudulent do not enjoy the proceeds of their unlawful activities. In this instance, the Commission relied on Section 17 of the Advance Fee Fraud And Other Fraud Related Offences Act No 14, 2006 and Section 44 (2) B of the Constitution of the 199 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to push its case. Ruling on the Commission’s application for the final forfeiture of the property, Justice Onwuegbuzie held that the respondent have not shown cause as to why he should not lose the property, “which has been reasonably suspected to have been acquired with proceeds of unlawful activities, the property is hereby finally forfeited to the federal government.” The road to the final forfeiture of the property was paved by an interim forfeiture order, secured before the same Judge on November 1, 2024. The government official which fraudulently built the estate is being investigated by the EFCC. The forfeiture of the asset is an important modality of depriving the suspect of the proceeds of the crime. The justification for the forfeiture is derived from Part 2, Section 7 of the EFCC Establishment Act, which stipulates that the EFCC “has power to cause investigations to be conducted as to whether any person, corporate body or organization has committed any offence under this Act or other law relating to economic and financial crimes and cause investigations to be conducted into the properties of any person if it appears to the Commission that the person’s lifestyle and extent of the properties are not justified by his source of income.” The Commission’s Executive Chairman, Mr. Ola Olukoyede, has repeatedly described asset recovery as pivotal in the fight against corruption, economic and financial crimes and a major disincentive against the corrupt and the fraudulent. Addressing members of the House of Representatives Committee on Anti-corruption recently, he said, “If you understand the intricacies involved in financial crimes investigation and prosecution you will discover that to recover one billion naira is war. So, I told my people that the moment we start investigation we must also start asset tracing because asset recovery is pivotal in the anti-corruption fight; and one of the potent instruments that you can deploy as an anti-corruption agency for an effective fight is asset tracing and recovery. If you allow the corrupt or those that you are investigating to have access to the proceeds of their crime, they will fight you with it. So one of the ways to weaken them is to deprive them of the proceeds of their crime. So, our modus operandi has changed simultaneously. The moment we begin investigation, we begin asset tracing. That was what helped us to make our recoveries.”
